10 killed, 11 injured in Kogi auto crash

Ten people have lost their lives and eleven others sustained injuries in a tragic road crash along the Obajana–Lokoja highway in Kogi State on Friday night, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.

According to a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, said the crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. at Apamaru.

Mohammed explained that the incident involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL, which was conveying 21 male passengers.

He said preliminary investigations by the FRSC indicated that speeding and wrongful overtaking by the driver led to the crash after he lost control of the vehicle.

The FRSC chief said the injured passengers were taken to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, while the remains of the deceased were released to their families.

Expressing sadness over the fatal incident, Mohammed urged motorists to avoid night travel, excessive speeding, and dangerous overtaking, which he described as major causes of deadly crashes in Nigeria.

He appealed to passengers to always speak up or report reckless driving, stressing that “silence in the face of recklessness is complicity in tragedy.”

Mohammed reminded the public that road safety is a shared responsibility and encouraged road users to report unsafe driving by calling the FRSC toll-free line 122, or by notifying the nearest patrol team or security agency.

He also reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to tighter enforcement against overloading and to expanding awareness campaigns discouraging night journeys, particularly on major transport routes.
