Thirteen persons have been confirmed dead in two separate accidents early Saturday in the Ogun State sections of Lagos-Ibadan expressway and Lagos-Benin road.
In one of the accidents, six people lost their lives when two vehicles collided on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun, Ahmed Umar, who confirmed the accident, said that 12 other persons sustained various degrees of injury.
Umar said the accident, which involved 18 persons, occurred at about 3.20am, adding that the two vehicles involved are a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number MKA 567 XZ and an Iveco articulated vehicle marked XF 854 KTN.
“The corpses of the victims have been deposited at Idera Hospital, Sagamu, while the survivors were taken to different hospitals for treatment,’’ he said.
He blamed the crash on excessive speeding and loss of control and urged motorists to desist from overspeeding to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and property.
Umar also told NAN that N127,900 was recovered from the accident scene.
The second accident involving Mercedes Benz luxury bus occurred on Ososa Bridge along the Sagamu-Benin expressway.
Umar said the accident that claimed seven lives occurred at 12:20am on Christmas Day, and it was caused by excessive speeding, wrongful overtaking and loss of control by the driver.
He added that seven others sustained various degrees of injuries from the accident.
The sector commander said that the unregistered vehicle heading to the eastern part of the country took off from Ojuelegba, Lagos.
According to him, 63 persons — 40 male adults, 15 female adults and eight children — were on the bus and that 49 of them, including all the children, escaped unhurt.
Umar added that the injured victims were given first aid treatment while the deceased were deposited at the Ogun State Hospital Mortuary, Ijebu-Ode.
The sector commander advised motorists to drive defensively, maintain safe speed limit, avoid night travels and obey traffic rules and regulations.
