16 military officers face Defence headquarters investigation

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the arrest of sixteen military officers over alleged acts of indiscipline and violation of service regulations.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information.

According to Gusau, the arrests were part of a routine military exercise aimed at promoting discipline and professionalism within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He explained that investigations showed some of the detained officers had grievances linked to perceived stagnation in their careers, particularly due to repeated failures in promotion examinations and other service-related concerns.

“Some of the apprehended officers had been under jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial. Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service,” the statement read in part.

Gusau said that once investigations are concluded, any officers found culpable would be subjected to the full military disciplinary process in line with established procedures.

He emphasised that the disciplinary measures were designed to uphold accountability and maintain professionalism across the Armed Forces.

“The Armed Forces wishes to assure the general public that these actions are strictly disciplinary in nature and part of routine efforts to maintain order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks,” he stated.

He also reaffirmed the military’s commitment to professionalism and its constitutional duties under democratic authority.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will remain professional at all times,” Gusau added.
