200 houses destroyed in Katsina after torrential rain

Many residents of Katsina State have been displaced after a torrential rainfall destroyed over two hundred mud houses.

The devastating incident happened at Natsinta village, Daddara District in the Jibia Local Government Area of the north-west State.

Natsinta buildings, most of which were built with mud, caved in as they could not withstand the severe impact of the seven days heavy downpour.

No live was lost as the residents had since left the community for safety.

Residents were also said to have lost valuables worth millions of naira in the disaster, leaving them in a state of distress and uncertainty.

A source from Daddara who spoke in confidence with newsmen said he could not ascertain the number of houses destroyed “but as of Saturday, the district head of Daddara alongside a delegation from the House of Assembly member representing the area walked through the area and 160 houses were counted as they left for prayers in the evening. The House member asked them to take the inventory of the destroyed houses.

“The torrential rain lasted for seven days but the last three days, precisely between last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday was the major cause”, he added.

However, a resident, Mas’udu Lawal, cited the absence of proper drainage systems in the area as reason for the incident, noting that the blockage of a crucial drainage channel had also worsens the incident.
