Northerners against restructuring are selfish – El-Rufai

Published

on

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has condemned fellow northerners opposed to restructuring, saying that they are doing so for selfish purpose.

He pointed out that there was a difference between the position of Northern Elders Forum against restructuring and northerners as a region.

The governor argued that there are over a 100 million northerners whose interests were at stake and stressed that whatever advantages an individual was getting for might not apply directly to the entire North.

“We have the highest number of out-of-school children. We have the highest poverty rate. We have the lowest JAMB cut-off rate. So, what are the advantages in the North in the current situation?

“As the governor of Kaduna State, I have had to look at these issues and try to see how I can get the people of my state up on the ladder. I think you need to differentiate the knowledge from a few and the voice of the silent majority,” he said.

El-Rufai, however, regretted that certain people present restructuring in a derogatory way in a manner that portrays all the northerners as backward people.

He said, “The way some people present restructuring is so insulting and derogatory. We should have an honest conversation on what is working and what is not. We don’t have anything to benefit making derogatory remarks against a particular group of people because of restructuring.

“If there are northern leaders today by virtual of the fact that I am a governor, I must be there. So, who are these northerners against restructuring? Who are they? Who are they speaking for?

“So, let us have a very honest, unemotional conversation without looking down on people or insulting them or framing them” he noted.

El-Rufai, who is also chairman of the APC Restructuring Committee, said the draft bill produced and submitted by his committee in January 2018 was stepped down for fear of politicisation ahead of 2019 general elections.

But he was quick to add that some interested members of the ruling party were making frantic efforts to get the draft bill presented to the National Assembly for consideration before the end of the tenure of the present administration.

The governor said the committee made some recommendations and a draft bill available for onward transmission to the National Assembly, which every lawmaker could take up and sponsor as a private bill.

He said, “We do not need executive bill to start action on the draft bill submitted by the committee.”

He insisted the position of the party and the President to see the draft bill passed into law, adding that consideration of the bill would soon take off.

On insecurity in the southern Kaduna, the governor said the violence in northern Kaduna was more devastating than the insecurity in southern Kaduna as perceived by the public.

He, however, did not give details concerning the real causes of the violence, promising that he would make himself available only if a separate session would be arranged to discuss the issue.

El-Rufai argued that population could only be controlled through the education of the girl-child.

He said, “There is a lot of debate on that because countries that have tried to curtail demographic growth like China have now reversed themselves. Singapore even pays you to have children.

“The current thinking in the developing economics is that population growth is not bad if you can ensure that population growth rate is faster and the population is educated and healthy.”

Kano’ll support Tinubu’s presidential ambition, says Speaker

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hamisu Chidari, said the APC in Kano State would support the 2023 presidential ambition of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in 2023.

He spoke at the inauguration of the Tinubu Support Group and the state steering committees of the TSG in Abuja on Saturday.

Chidari said Kano State, which has the highest number of voters and delegates in the country, would repay Tinubu’s act of helping the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to become President in 2015.

“My purpose is to kick-start the journey that will take us to the Villa by God’s grace with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the number one citizen of Nigeria,” he said.

The lawmaker added, “In Kano, being the state with the highest number of delegates, we have already decided and already concluded; we are set to give him at least 98 per cent of delegates in the primaries. Not only that, we are set as usual to give him the highest number of votes so that come May 29, 2023, we will be at the Eagle Square to swear him in as the President.

“All of us in the North-West are aware of the role he played in taking our son, President Muhammadu Buhari, to the Villa. So, we are going to reward him; we are going to pay him back. So, I have assured him of victory. Almost all the delegates from the North-West states are going to vote for him in the next primary elections.”

The purported ambition of the former governor of Lagos State was said to have deepened the crisis of the APC in Kano State, Sunday PUNCH has learnt.

Tinubu fought corruption in Lagos with technology – Faleke

Meanwhile, a member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Committee on Finance, Mr James Faleke, said Tinubu fought corruption with technology while serving as governor Lagos State.

Faleke , who spoke during the inauguration of the support group, said, “The least sacrifice we can make is to let the whole country see the leadership we have seen, feel the compassion we have felt, and move the maker of modern Lagos to be the reformer of a greater Nigeria.

“My claim that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is the maker of modern Lagos State is a truthful assertion. The landscape can tell the stories of its transformation from 1999 to 2007.”

In a related development, the coordinators of the Tinubu Support Organisation in the South-West have been chosen by delegates across the five states of the region.

The Director-General of the organisation, Alhaji Suleiman Aminu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Abdulghaniyy Kareem, congratulated the state arrowheads and charged the new coordinators to adhere to the goals of the organisation.

The new coordinators are Lanre Sodipo (Ogun State), Otunba Olusegun  Fanibe (Osun State), Ezekiel Omotosho (Ekiti State),  Akin Akingbesote (Ondo State) and Ambali Abiodun (Oyo State).

The Lagos TSO coordinator, Mr Akinduro Ibesanmi, noted that the group’s mission was to accomplish the mandate of Asiwaju Tinubu in the 2023 elections.

An elder statesman from Ekiti State, Pa Olomola Jegede, encouraged coordinators to be steadfast pending Tinubu’s declaration to contest presidency in 2023.

The coordinators in their response however assured the organisation of their readiness to work and mobilise for the ex-governor of Lagos State.

Don’t Die For Politicians, Makinde warns Nigerians at Wedding Of Fayose’s Son

Published

Seyi Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has warned Nigerians against dying for politicians.

He gave the warning at the wedding of one of the sons of former Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State.

Despite their political differences, Makinde was one of the guests at the wedding, which held in Lagos on Saturday.

Makinde and Fayose had been locked in a battle for the control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West.

Also at the wedding of Fayose’s son were Governor Kayode Fayemi, a former political rival of Fayose, and former Governor Olusegun Oni, who fell out with Fayemi at the last governorship election in Ekiti.

Oni had lost out in the race to clinch the APC ticket for the governorship election which was won by Fayemi.

Commenting on the presence of the key politicians, including Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers, at the wedding, Makinde said, “If you look at the former governors in Ekiti State – Governor Segun Oni, Governor Ayo Fayose and the incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi, they have governed the state at one time or the other but they were not in the same  party. So, those of you who want to die because of us politicians, be careful.

“Politics is not something that should cause anybody to lose his or her life. We are moving towards the electioneering period, and I just want to use this opportunity to appeal to you all.

“If you also look at this marriage, the bride and groom are from Christian and Muslim families. So, people who also want to always fight on religious grounds should have a rethink.”

“We the great movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), wish to inform Biafrans, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom that IPOB will lock down Biafra land from 5th of November to 10th of November except Sunday, November 7th, a day our people worship the Almighty God, Chukwu Okike Abiama, if the Nigeria Government fails to release our leader unconditionally before 4th of November 2021” he stated.

IPOB said its leader Nnamdi Kanu must be released unconditionally on or before November 4, 2021 “because he has not committed any offense known to any law.

According to the group, “failure to release Nnamdi KANU on or before November 4, 2021 there will be one week Sit-At-Home beginning on November 5, 2021 till November 10.”

Daily Trust reports that Kanu was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja on treasonable felony and terrorism charges.

The fresh seven-count charges against Kanu followed his arrest and extradition from Kenya after he jumped bail.

Kanu, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
