Nigerian youths celebrate Ooni’s achievements on fifth anniversary

A young Nigerian entrepreneur, Chukwuebuka Obidike, has joined other Nigerian youths to celebrate the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, and his many achievements on his fifth year on the throne.

The Abuja-based Youth Ambassador to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said during a visit to the monarch in his Ile Ife palace that he was thrilled by the numerous achievements of the monarch, adding that these had further endeared him to the people and increased their respect for the Ooni.

He said he had “a wonderful time celebrating the most youth-friendly and peaceful traditional leader in Nigeria, and I believe in the whole of the African continent too.”

Obidike who hails from Nnewi in Anambra State, said, “In an era where people do not believe in leadership, they see it as an opportunity to siphon funds but the Ooni’s innovative ideas have made an indelible imprints in Nigeria, especially among the youths, and he’s indeed a positive influence to younger generation.”

He further stated, “His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Oguwunsi Ojaja II is a lover of youths and is always empowering young people individually and collectively through one of his outstanding innovative ideas “Grass to Grace (G2G) Foundation.

“A lot of young people who are undergraduates are also in his scholarship scheme through the foundation where he’s also making young graduates millionaires. It’s always very difficult to know his biological children because of his love for the people especially young Nigerians. He doesn’t segregate and most importantly he is humble.”

Obidike restated his usual position that Nigerian youths must believe in the vision of their founding fathers, even as he urged them to ensure that their faith is reinvigorated towards the actualisation of the Nigerian dream.

He also enjoined the youths to be proactive and creative using the platform and opportunities available to them to create the enabling environment for other young persons to thrive and live their dreams.

Obidike said it was a memorable experience being part of the activities in honour of the monarch on his fifth anniversary on the throne, which featured cocktail, a lecture, panel discussions and dinner with the monarch.

The celebration attracted very important personalities from within and outside the country.

Armed thugs disrupt NLC second day protest in Kaduna

Armed thugs on Tuesday disrupted a protest by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Kaduna as they attacked the union leaders and other protesters.
The thugs, who were armed with knives, sticks and stones attacked the protesters at NEPA roundabout, were however dispersed by security personnel deployed to protect the protesters.
And some of the thugs were reportedly arrested.
The protesters said although no one was injured, they were forced to suspend the peaceful procession for the day.
Earlier, the NLC Chairman in the state, Mr Ayuba Suleiman, said that the labour unions remained committed to the principle of dialogue and social bargaining for the benefit of disengaged workers in the state.
The labour unions on Monday began a five-day warning strike over the sacking of civil servants by the Kaduna State Government.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai, in a tweet early on Tuesday had declared the labour leaders wanted but the Ayuba Wabba-led union ignored the threatened and directed the protesters to go ahead with their industrial action.
The State Secretary of the council, Christiana John Bawa, said no any employer of state government under the present leadership of Governor Nasir Elrufai had job security or safe from disengagement.
She lamented that in April 2021, Kaduna State Government had sacked over 4,000 workers without following due process.
“It will be recalled also that Kaduna State Government sacked over 30,000 workers in 2016 and up to date their entitlements have not been settled” she said.
“Since the history of Nigeria there’s no government that disengaged workers like the present government of Governor Nasir El-rufai.”
She directed all workers particularly teachers, local government and the state workers to disregard the government’s circular against the warning strike.
Comrade Christiana John Bawa said all affiliates of the NLC in the state would join the strike.
They are the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG ), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW)
National Union of Electricity Employees of Nigeria (NUEE), National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE).
Others are the Nigeria Union of Railway, Textile, National Association of Nurses and Midwives, Aviation workers Union, Construction union and local government employees.

Sexual assault: Baba Ijesha granted N500,000 bail

A Chief Magistrate, Oluwatoyin Oghre, on Monday granted a Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James aka Baba Ijesha, bail.
in the sum of N500,000.
His lawyer, Adesina Ogunlana, confirmed this on Monday, saying, “He has been granted bail about one hour ago. We are working to perfect the bail. He was granted bail on health grounds.
“He has not been released. He will be released after his bail conditions have been met.”
Baba Ijesha was arrested on April 22, for allegedly sexually molesting a minor and remained in police detention due to the ongoing strike embarked on by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria.
Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, had on May 4, noted that after due consideration of the case file forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecution by the police on April 30, 2021, a prima facie case was established against Baba Ijesha.
Onigbanjo stated that Baba Ijesha would be charged with sexual assault and defilement under the provisions of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The AG also hinted that the suspect would be charged under Section 135, with indecent treatment of a child punishable by seven years imprisonment; Section 137, defilement of a child, punishable by life imprisonment; Section 261, sexual assault by penetration punishable by life imprisonment; Section 262, attempted sexual assault by penetration, punishable by 14 years imprisonment and Section 263, sexual assault punishable by three years’ imprisonment.

2 cops killed, police station, vehicles burnt in Abia attack

Gunmen have killed two policemen in Ubakala Divisional Police Station in Umuahia, Abia State, after setting the station ablaze.
The gunmen were said to have attacked the station with explosives in the early hours of Monday and two of the policemen drafted to quel the station were killed.
The attackers also set ablaze all the vehicles on the premises.

Spokesman for the Police Command in Abia, SP Godfrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident, adding that the hoodlums attacked the station just after midnight with explosives.
According to him, the operatives, who were deployed to reinforce security at the station, tried to repel the assailants.
“In the process, we lost two of our men,” he said, pointing out that the number of the attackers had yet to be ascertained.
The attack was said to have caused serious panic among residents of the community.
Gunmen have recently carried out attacks on police stations in Aba, Isialangwa, Uzuakoli and Nkporo.
They also attacked the offices of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and Independent National Electoral Commission in Ohafia.
