Automakers delaying recalls to limit negative attention – Study

Many automakers have been involved recalls of new vehicles already released or sold to people across the globe for safety purposes.

Some accidents, including fatal ones, have been traced to issues discovered in such defective vehicles.

In preventing these issues, manufacturers have had complete many thousands of miles in validation testing in different conditions.

But it’s almost impossible to completely eliminate all mechanical hurdles, hence the recall once detected.

Investigations have revealed that many automakers have the best intentions when it comes to swiftly issuing recalls and getting vehicles fixed.

But a recent study by Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business shows that 73 per cent of recalls are announced in clusters, suggesting a pattern to these types of announcements.

The biggest driving force in this complicated issue is the stock market.

As such, the study looked at the six automakers with stock publicly traded in the United States – Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Nissan and Toyota.

For the uninitiated, the automaker that initiates a recall is hit the hardest – obviously depending on how catastrophic the mistake is. Of the six automakers included in the study, only nine per cent of its recalls were leading the pack; Toyota was the exception to the rule with much more random recalls – 31 per cent of them being leading recalls.

“The implication is that auto firms are either consciously or unconsciously delaying recall announcements until they are able to hide in the herd,” said George Ball, assistant professor of operations and decision technologies and Weimer Faculty Fellow at Indiana University.

“We’ll gloss over some of the more recent scandals but highlights in the past have proven to be downright dangerous. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) currently requires automakers to disclose when they find an issue to mitigate this type of event. In extreme cases, this sort of self-preservation has come at the cost of human life and well-being, but thankfully the majority of modern recalls don’t pose a major risk to motorists.”

TSS Motors showcases superb features of new Asiastar luxury bus

Transit Support Services Limited (TSS Motors), has showcased its newly introduced Asiastar luxury bus as combining ruggedness with comfort and smooth ride throughout every journey and the entire life of the vehicle.
The auto assembler says this in a statement by its Head of the Public Relations and Media team, Iyere Ikhide.
It states that the new product brand and models unveiled in November 2020, at the Ikeja Sheraton Hotels, Lagos, comes with 53-passenger seater, non-independent air-conditioned luxury coach found suitable for commercial passenger transport, football club and sports teams’ transportation, government executive shuttle services, with an advanced concept in body design and architecture.
According to TSS, the luxury bus has been equipped with adjustable soft passenger seats with USB charger, LCD TV (front, middle), DVD, and a modern ambient lighting design on the roof.
It says, “The U-beam body structure of the Asiastar luxury bus has length, width and height of 12000, 2550 and 3860 (mm) respectively.
“It is equipped with WP10.336N/WD615 engine models, fast 6DS (Benz GO230-6 as optional) gearbox, a Pneumatic double circuit air brake system, and air suspension shock absorbers.
“It comes with a unique set of headlamps which are divided into two parts, with full LED lighting, making the front view elegant and very beautiful.
The statement quotes the General Manager, TSS Motors, Mr Dave Chukwudulue, as saying, “TSS Motors is known for her state of the art, top of the line products which conform to the latest design trends in the automobile industry.
“With the Asiastar luxury coaches, the operators and passengers of these coaches will not be disappointed on any point of our standard offerings before now.”
The GM also says, “And as with our other products, our key selling points for the Asiastar luxury coaches are effective and efficient after-sales service and parts support backup, cost-effective, durable, robust, rugged, comfortable and smooth luxury ride, all through the distance and operational life of the vehicle.
“And no matter the operational application: as commercial passenger luxury coach, government executives’ group shuttle, football club and sports teams’ logistics medium, the Asiastar is configured and built to deliver, and even surpass on all, expectations, without fail.
“Furthermore, the vehicles are on the ground for immediate delivery on receipt of payment. It’s cash and carry. No delivery lead time, with attendant costs on capital outlay prior to operations.”

Osinbajo: First Nigeria-assembled electric car, Hyundai Kona, fantastic

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is obviously excited after not only beholding but test-driving the first Nigerian-assembled electric car, Hyundai Kona.
He praised those behind the ingenious idea, Hyundai Motors Nigeria’s team, a subsidiary of Stallion Group, for the success of the project that had put the country on the enviable global map of electric vehicle assemblers.
Osinbajo, giving a thumbs up for the Nigeria-assembled Hyundai Kona electric car after the test-drive of the vehicle in Abuja, described it as a fantastic machine.
The Vice President made the remarks during his recent tour of made-in-Nigeria products at the opening ceremony of a five-day Nigeria @ 60 Expo being held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
The event was organised by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Nigeria @ 60 in collaboration with Business Visa and Training Co Ltd.
Osinbajo, while speaking with the newsmen the test-drive, said with the exciting introduction of Hyundai Kona electric car in Nigeria, he was hopeful of a bright future for the country.
He said, “A very good drive; fantastic; it just shows what is possible.”
He also said, “I am glad to see that this is an assembled-in-Nigeria electric car.
“You can literally charge it anywhere; I think it is a very fantastic innovation; fantastic product, and I can tell because I drove it.”
A statement by the Stallion Motors said the Stallion Group, Nigeria’s exclusive assembler and distributors of Hyundai brand, took up the challenge of doing something unique without being discouraged by the infrastructural issues in the country and decided to roll out Hyundai Kona, the nation’s first ever Electric Vehicle (EV) in conjugation with Hyundai Motors Nigeria, “purposely to embark on the attitudinal change for a clean environment.”
It stated, “Hyundai Motors Nigeria recognised this paradigm shift in the transportation sector by bringing in electric mobility that is a step towards the same goal.”
It stated that the vehicle was assembled at the Stallion Group’s VON assembly plant at Ojo, Lagos.
It also recalled that the car was launched into the Nigerian market late 2020 and “has since attracted kudos from various government functionaries, including the National Assembly.”

The car, according to the auto assembler, is 100 per cent electric with zero carbon emission.
The Kona, it stated, could go up to a range of 482km with an acceleration of 0-100km in 9.7 seconds on a single battery cycle of a capacity of 64 KWH.
The ease of charging remained unmatched and could be plugged in at home or work for 9.35 hours for a full battery, it added.
Since debuted worldwide, Kona electric has been widely lauded for its class-leading driving range, fast-charging capability, safety and convenience features.
Safety
The firm highlights the safety features of the car, noting that despite being an EV, Kona comes with some of the safety features that are not even available in cars powered by the traditionally known internal combustion engine.
For instance, it notes that aside from multiple safety airbags, the car comes with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), which uses the car’s front-facing camera and radar to help detect an imminent collision and avoid impact or minimize damage by braking autonomously, made possible by the new Hyundai SmartSense safety technologies.
Kona is also said to have gone through the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) carried out by the United States’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and was awarded the highest safety rating of 5 stars.
“Kona is so smart that it is capable of sensing road markings, using Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), which helps to prevent accidental lane departure and may automatically steer the car if required.

It is said to also come with Driver Attention Warning, which monitors the owner/driver’s driving patterns and even detects drowsy or inattentive driving and alerts the driver with a sound cue and warning message on the instrument panel.
It gave its additional safety technologies as Blind Spot Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Warning.

Osinbajo test-drives Hyundai Kona, Nigeria’s locally-assembled electric car

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday test-drove the first locally-assembled electric car, Hyundai Kona.
It was during an exhibition tour of made-in-Nigeria products at the opening ceremony of a five-day Nigeria@60 Expo, held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
The event was organised by the inter-ministerial committee on Nigeria@60, in collaboration with Business Visa and Training Company Limited.
The vehicle, which was assembled by Stallion Motors, was first launched in Lagos in November 2020 by the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Director-General, National Automotive Design and Development Council, Jelani Aliyu, in February 2021 unveiled the vehicle in Abuja.
Osinbajo said he was impressed with the innovation, adding that it was an indication of a bright future for Nigeria.
He said, “A very good drive. Fantastic! It just shows what is possible. I am glad to see that this is an assembled-in-Nigeria electric car.”
“You can literally charge it anywhere. I think it is a very fantastic innovation, fantastic product, and I can tell because I drove it.”
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the event was aimed at showcasing what Nigeria can produce with local raw materials.
“To complement the efforts of the federal government at ensuring that we produce what we eat and eat what we produce, in this context, we are to produce what we use and use what we produce,” he said.
Director-General, World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in a goodwill message, commended the organisers for their efforts to showcase the growth of Nigeria’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
