Confusion over arrest of notorious Oyo herder, Wakili, four OPC members

Published

on

The police have arrested four members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) for arresting a notorious herdsman, Iskilu Wakili, who has been terrorising residents of Ayete and its environs in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State.

The police authorities in Oyo reportedly questioned the right and propriety of the OPC members to have arrested Wakili

When contacted, Oyo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olugbenga Fadeyi, could not confirm the arrest.

He said he was not aware of the development.

He however wondered why the OPC men would arrest an individual, a duty reserve for security operatives, especially the police.

He said, “I don’t have any detail about such arrest. But the OPC are not the police. How can they arrest another person? I will find out to know what happen and where they have taken Wakili to.”

Wakili, who has been terrorising farm owners in Ibarapa communities in Oyo State, was reportedly arrested in the early hours of Sunday.

He has been linked with several nefarious activities, including seizure of hectares of farmland, rape and kidnapping rich indigenes in the area for ransom, among many other despicable atrocities.

NCAA: FG set to regulate use of drones

Published

on

The Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Capt. Musa Nuhu, has said there is a need for strong regulatory framework for the deployment of drones to ensure safety and security.

Nuhu said this in his presentation, ‘Drone Essence, Growth and Regulations in Nigeria’, at the Airport Business Summit on Cargo & Aero Logistics and Drone Technology Expo, in Lagos on Wednesday.

He said the huge demand for drones and the pace of development of the market was incredibly fast, hence the need for regulation.

He said drones were originally developed for the military and airspace industries, but were now being used for monitoring climate change, goods delivery, search and rescue operations, filming agricultural surveillance and so on.

Nuhu said the NCAA and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) would synergise with the government and stakeholders to mitigate risks to national security and public safety, posed by people who were wrongly deploying drones.

He said, “Drones can be referred to as the following; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs).

“Drones have a long and established history that dates back to centuries, but presently there is a paradigm shift.

“Their original use was as a weapon in the form of remotely-guided aerial missile deployers. However, today, drones have found a wide range of applications for civilian use. Its essence can be described with one word ‘Versatility.’

“Currently, there is a huge demand for drones. The pace of development of the drone market, both recreational and commercial is incredibly fast.”

According to the NCAA boss, there is a need for regulation of this versatile technology and regulations will create a level playing field for RPAS/UAV operators.

He said, “Safety is key to the Nigerian Airspace System. Our goal for unmanned aircraft remains complete and total integration of safety and security is a shared responsibility for stakeholders and UAV operators.

“We must ensure that the Nigerian Airspace remains safe and that the benefits of UAV operations are well understood and implemented.

“I have no doubt that the current legal framework and collaboration with operators, stakeholders and Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) will provide a robust structure and system for the regulation of drone operation and its structured growth in Nigeria.”

Gumi accuses security forces of working with bandits

Published

on

Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmad Gumi, says security operatives are working with the bandits that are attacking innocent people, places and kidnapping across the country.

He made the allegation on Wednesday when he featured on Arise TV, accusing some security personnel of giving the armed gangs a soft landing.

Gumi, who described banditry as a business, said gunmen would not have had access to weapons without the support of some security personnel.

He said, “These bandits, if you don’t know, are cooperating with a lot of bad elements in our security system. This is a business. So many people are involved, you’ll be so surprised.”

“They were caught in Zamfara; they were caught everywhere, how do these big weapons cross our borders? How can these big weapons cross our borders and get into the forest without the cooperation of some bad element of the security operatives assisting them? It’s not possible. If I give you the same amount of guns can you take it to the UK? You can’t, because the security is alert.”

He said it was unfair to compare bandits with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to him, while bandits abduct people for money, IPOB militants attack security operatives and destroy government facilities.

“IPOB is attacking the police, the army, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other government institutions; killing our men in service,” he said.

“And the herdsmen are kidnapping children not to kill them but to get money; so how can you compare somebody who is killing our gallant men directly to somebody who is kidnapping children to make money and not to kill them. Look, we need some fairness in what we are doing,” he added.

The bandit and his colleagues had reportedly laid ambush for the expatriate at Plan Farm Phase when the security operatives ran into them.

The police said they had to engage them in a gun battle, leading to the killing of one of the bandits.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday at 9.31pm in which four fully-loaded AK47 magazines were also recovered.

A statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Muhammad Jalige, said the body of the bandit had been recovered.

He said, “On the 21st June, 2021 at about 9.31pm while on escort duty of an expatriate to Plan Farm Phase at Dankande area of Igabi LGA, police officers ran into an ambush laid by suspected armed bandits in their desperate attempt to kidnap the expatriate.

“The gun duel with the bandits lasted for some time but the operatives were able to repel the bandits and secure the Indian expatriate unhurt. Meanwhile, the bandits fled into the forest with bullet wounds.

“A joint team of the police and military personnel while on search of the area on 22nd June, 2021 recovered the lifeless body of one of the bandit, four AK47 magazines fully loaded with 120 rounds of live 7.62 X 39mm ammunitions and a mobile phone.”
