Anambra gov election: INEC finally lists Soludo as APGA candidate

Published

on

The Independent National Electoral Commission has reviewed the list of candidates for the Anambra governorship election, replacing Michael Umeoji with Chukwuma Soludo as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

INEC, however, still excluded the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the list of cleared candidates for the poll.

In the list published on July 16, INEC had excluded the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Michael Umeoji was listed as the candidate for APGA.

But in a ruling on July 19, a federal high court in Awka, the Anambra capital, affirmed Soludo as the candidate of APGA.

Similarly, on August 10, a court of appeal sitting in Kano had affirmed Victor Oye as APGA chairman — Soludo was elected governorship candidate of the party during a primary organised by the Oye-led faction.

Speaking on the development, Festus Okoye, INEC’s commissioner for information and voter education, had said the commission would comply with “valid court orders”.

In a statement on Thursday, Okoye said the commission met and deliberated on a number of issues, including the nomination of candidates for the Anambra governorship election.

According to him, the revised list of candidates is the result of a court order received by the commission on APGA, as well as substitution of candidates’ names by various political parties.

“The commission was served with the judgement of the Court of Appeal (Kano Division) which set aside the judgement of the High Court of Jigawa State on the leadership of APGA and the nomination of its candidates for the Anambra governorship election,” the statement said.

The final list of candidates would be published on October 7, 2021, the INEC commissioner said.

Osinbajo-for-President Campaign Posters Flood Ibadan

Published

Campaign posters of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo have surfaced at some strategic areas of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The posters, which bear the portrait of the Vice President, have ‘Osinbajo for All 2023’ boldly written on them.

Our correspondent observed that the posters were pasted at Dugbe, Mokola and University of Ibadan/Bodija Junction and Iwo Road, among other areas in the ancient metropolis.

The VP is being tipped to succeed the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who is billed to leave office in 2023.  But Osinbajo has not publicly declared any intention to join the presidential race.

A group, Osinbajo For All  Volunteer Group, had some months ago, in a statement, said they were sensitising Nigerians to the suitability of the VP for the President position because of his qualities and experience.

When contacted on Friday, the National Coordinator of the group, Peter Ogundeji, said the group was behind the posters in Ibadan.

He said Osinbajo did not ask the group to campaign for him but its members were rooting for his possible emergence as Buhari’s successor.

According to him, Nigeria needs a God-fearing leader with experience at this time to steer its ship away from disaster.

He said, “Irrespective of whether Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has shown interest to run for the 2023 Presidency or not, ‘Osinbanjo For All Volunteer Group’ remains firmly committed to its belief that Osinbajo has all it takes to take our country to it place in destiny come 2023 and beyond.

“Let it be on record once again that Prof. Yemi Osinbajo didn’t mandate us to do this. He didn’t authorise us to mobilise for him; we are young and old men and women who strongly believe in his capacity.

“It is in him we think we can entrust our future. So, notwithstanding his stand for now, with respect to 2023, we shall continue to promote him, we shall continue to let the world know those qualities we have seen in him that have attracted many of us to him.”

Umahi seals off hotel hosting PDP temporal office ahead of congress

Published

on

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, on Friday sealed the Salt Lake, which belongs to the senator representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone, Sen. Obinna Ogba, a staunch member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ahead of their state congress.

The hotel is the temporal office of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ebonyi State wherein all members of the party, according to reports would gather to distribute state congress electoral materials that is scheduled to hold at the Peoples Club Event Centre, Abakaliki.

Umahi had said the reason for sealing off the hotel that belongs to senator Obinna Ogba was as a result of a rumoured attempt by aggressive members of APC to hold a parallel state congress at the venue.

The governor made this known while addressing stakeholders of the state during an enlarged APC meeting that took place at the Christian Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki.

He said: “One, Kenneth Nwakparata wants to conduct a parallel congress, he wrote a letter on social media saying he wants to conduct a parallel congress. That letter is fake and I have declared him wanted. Anywhere you see him, bring him to the police, you will get 500,000, and where he wants to conduct the congress is at Obinna Ogba Hotel.

“Well, they have gone to ask and they said they didn’t book the place but only wrote to me. I am cancelling any meeting there tomorrow. There shall be no meeting there and the CP must take over that place, the entire place must be beefed up with security. But, if you want to try, you try and go there and see what will happen. I am the chief security officer of the state and it is my duty to maintain law and order.

“No be every governor, they go try anyhow. Make them try this one and see. Is not possible for everybody to be very happy, that notwithstanding, if you want accommodation, we will give you. It must not be your will to stand, but it’s the will of the majority of the people of Ebonyi state, because Ebonyi state is APC and APC is Ebonyi State.

“Let me commend the various senatorial zones for the manner and peaceful way they resolved the positions that were zoned to them . The party’s constitution accommodates zoning and so, there is nothing anybody can do about that,” he stated.

In a swift reaction, the chairman of the peoples Democratic party, PDP, Elder Fred Udeogu, however, urged the governor to refrain from making a ridiculous statement that is capable of putting the lives of the peoples and the entire state in danger.

According to him: “I state categorically that the information you people have is as useless as it is unimaginable. As far as I am concerned, the owner of this hotel is a bonafide member of PDP. It is not easy for APC men to even come here to use this place for anything.

“The level of non-communication between PDP and APC is so diametric. It has been a long time since the governor has been looking for how to seal a hotel that belongs to a distinguished senator. This is baseless and directionless issues.

“Umahi lacks focus, advisers by saying he will seal this hotel, let him come and seal it. We are waiting. We applied to the police about a month ago and they have the timetable of PDP that covers the ward, local government and state congresses. We are carefully avoiding the government facility,” he stated.

Competence, not zone, should determine next president’s choice –Bakare

Published

on

The founder of Citadel Global Community Church, (formerly known as Latter Rain Assembly), Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said it does not matter where the next President comes from as long as the person can deliver good governance.

This is as he voiced his support for the electronic transmission of election results in the country, going forward. This, according to him, will protect eligible voters from disenfranchisement.

Bakare said this on Friday after a private meeting with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Bakare, who was Buhari’s running mate on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 presidential election, was scheduled for a 12-noon meeting with the President in his office.

Despite his previous close political affiliation with Buhari, the clergyman has in recent times castigated the President’s regime.

Speaking with State House Correspondents after the meeting, he said the visit was to “dispense what was in my heart” to the President.

On the power rotation debate, Bakare stated, “I had said it on October 3. It’s our immaturity, politically and otherwise, that makes us say power must either be in the North or be in the South, instead of looking for the best, the fittest, the most competent, and people of character, who love this nation.
