2027: APC in talks with four opposition governors over defection plans
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclosed that four sitting governors from opposition parties are in advanced discussions to defect to the ruling party before the end of 2025.
Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, APC’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), made the revelation during an interview, stating that the governors of Plateau, Taraba, Rivers, and Abia States are being actively courted as part of the party’s strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“It is a possibility that the Plateau governor will join us, likewise his Taraba counterpart. We are also looking forward to receiving Rivers governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State in our midst,” Arodiogbu said.
He noted that talks with the governors have reached an advanced stage and that their defection could occur “in the coming weeks,” potentially before the party’s congresses later this year.

“These are all high possibilities. Most of these defections are expected to happen before the end of this year. Once they happen, it will further confirm that the APC remains the dominant and most organised political platform in Nigeria,” he said.
Arodiogbu attributed the party’s growing appeal to its reform agenda and inclusive posture, which he said continues to attract prominent political figures across the country.
“The truth is that the APC has become a home for all progressives. We are not just expanding in numbers but in quality leadership. Governors and other political leaders are beginning to see that this is the platform that offers stability and direction for Nigeria’s democracy,” he added.
He also commended the national chairman’s open-door approach, saying the party remains receptive to politicians who align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The national chairman has made it clear that the APC is not closing its doors to anyone. We are reaching out to people of goodwill who believe in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
The APC believes the anticipated defections will strengthen its position ahead of the 2025 congresses and enhance its chances in the 2027 general elections.
