2027: Lagos Muslims Vow Not to Back Non-Muslim Governorship Candidate

The Muslim Community of Lagos State (MCLS) has declared that it will not support any political party that fields a non-Muslim candidate for the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, citing the need for fair representation and inclusivity in the state’s leadership.

The position was adopted during the MCLS General Assembly held in Ikeja, where Muslim leaders and delegates from various Islamic organisations across Lagos State met to deliberate on governance, education, and religious rights. At the meeting, the group resolved that Muslims in Lagos should unite politically and support only candidates who reflect their religious identity and collective interests.

According to the communique issued after the assembly, the Muslim community expressed concerns over what it described as persistent marginalisation of Muslims in key areas such as public appointments, education, and social policies. The group also raised issues relating to the recruitment of Arabic and Islamic Studies teachers, as well as the implementation of court rulings affecting religious rights, including the use of hijab in public schools.

The MCLS stressed that Muslims constitute a significant portion of Lagos State’s population and should not be sidelined in decisions that shape the political and administrative direction of the state. It urged political parties to take note of the position ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that failure to do so could affect voter support.

As political activities gradually build up toward the 2027 governorship race, the declaration is expected to influence party strategies, candidate selection, and voter mobilisation in Nigeria’s commercial capital, a state known for its religious diversity and political significance.
