EFCC places Anambra Governor Obiano on watch list

Outgoing Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, is on the the watch list of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Already, the anti-graft agency has written to the Nigeria Immigration Service to be on the watch out for Obiano so as to prevent him from travelling out of the country after handling over power early next year.

The commission in a November 15, 2021 letter to the Comptroller-General of the NIS requested the Service to place the governor on watch list and inform it anytime he is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports and other points of entry and exit.

Sitting governors in Nigeria enjoy immunity from criminal prosecution while in office.

Sources at the EFCC Abuja office said the agency might have been discreetly investigating the governor and have intelligence that he had the plan to escape after handing over power to his successor, Prof. Charles Soludo, on March 16, 2022.

The development raises serious concern among Obiano’s followers and political associates. Since he assumed office in 2013, the governor has never been linked with any scam or fraud

The governor has also emerged as one of the least controversial politicians in Nigeria.
