23 states, FCT implement 65-year retirement age for teachers – NUT

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) announced that 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have implemented the 65-year retirement age for teachers.

This was disclosed by the union’s National President, Titus Amba, in a report obtained in Abuja on Saturday.

The new retirement age, which was raised from 60 to 65 years, was introduced in 2020 by former President Muhammadu Buhari to enhance the educational system by retaining experienced teachers for a longer period.

Amba stated, “We are pleased to note that 23 states, the FCT, and the Federal Government have implemented the new retirement age for their teachers.” He urged the remaining states to adopt the policy without further delay, emphasizing its benefits for the education system.

The NUT also expressed concerns over the stagnation of teachers in Unity Schools who have reached the directorate cadre due to the lack of declared vacancies. The union called for these teachers to be promoted without delay to ensure their career progression aligns with their counterparts in the State Teaching Services.
