5 dead in canoe capsize in Jigawa

Five people have tragically died after a canoe capsized in Gantsa town, Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, when the canoe, carrying the five individuals, attempted to cross a road submerged by floodwaters.

DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, spokesman for the Jigawa State Police Command, confirmed the incident.

The canoe capsized, leading to the drowning of all occupants. Emergency responders, including local divers and police officers, arrived at the scene promptly but were unable to save the victims.

The deceased were transported to Gantsa Cottage Hospital, where they were pronounced dead by the medical staff.

The victims, identified as Lurwanu Adamu, Idris Abubakar, Fiddausi Dahiru, Ramla Nura, and Usman Adamu, were from Malamawar Gangare, Birnin Kudu LGA. Their bodies have been returned to their families for burial.
