62-year-old Woman defies odds to give birth through IVF in Lagos

A remarkable story emerged from Lagos as 62-year-old Fummi Akinade successfully gave birth to a baby boy after 31 years of marriage without children. The child was conceived through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and delivered via caesarean section at 37 weeks in the StrongTower Hospital and Advanced Fertility Centre, a private medical facility in Lagos.

Mrs. Akinade spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria, recounting her marriage in 1992 and years of unsuccessful attempts to conceive. She underwent three failed IVF procedures before the fourth one proved successful. Through it all, her husband’s unwavering support and her faith in God sustained her hopes.

Undoubtedly, the financial burden of fertility treatments remains a significant challenge for many couples. Mrs. Akinade called on governments to subsidize IVF and other fertility procedures, particularly for those with limited financial means.
