80 Militants Surrender Arms in Calabar, Boosting Cross River Peace Efforts

Calabar, Nigeria — In a major security breakthrough, 80 militants operating along the Calabar waterways and Akpabuyo creeks have surrendered their weapons and joined the Cross River State Government’s amnesty programme, signaling a significant step toward peace and stability in the coastal region.

The surrender took place at the Atimbo Rear Area of Operation OKWOK in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, under the supervision of the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army. Two groups of militants, led by ThankGod Ebikontei (Ayibanuagha) and John Isaac (Akpokolo), voluntarily laid down their arms and handed over an array of firearms, ammunition, explosives, and speedboats previously used in attacks along the waterways.

The confiscated arsenal included AK‑47 rifles, pump-action guns, a Mark‑4 rifle, a G3 rifle, single-barrel guns, ammunition, and a C4 explosive charge, as well as three speedboats and four engines. Security officials described the surrender as a “confidence-building milestone,” underscoring the success of military operations and community engagement in curbing militancy.

After handing over their weapons, the former militants were transferred to the Cross River State Rapid Response Team and are undergoing profiling by the Department of State Services (DSS) as part of rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

Local authorities and security experts have welcomed the development, highlighting it as proof that dialogue, amnesty programmes, and collaboration between security agencies and communities can effectively reduce violence and promote long-term peace in the South-South region.
