Empowering communities: How NNPC prioritises cancer, eye care, ICT projects under Kyari
Empowering communities: How NNPC prioritises cancer, eye care, ICT projects under Kyari
As Nigeria grapples with persistent healthcare challenges—from inadequate infrastructure to limited access to diagnostic tools—NNPC Ltd. is redefining the playbook for Corporate Social Responsibility.
With initiatives spanning cutting-edge medical facilities to grassroots health programmes, the state-owned oil giant is setting a new standard for private-sector engagement in public health.
In a sector often criticised for neglecting social impact, NNPC Ltd.’s interventions signal a transformative approach to addressing societal needs at scale.
NNPC Ltd., long synonymous with energy solutions, is redefining its corporate identity by addressing critical healthcare challenges.
Through its CSR arm, the NNPC Foundation, and strategic partnerships with Joint Venture (JV) partners, the company is reshaping the healthcare narrative in Nigeria.
These initiatives align with the vision of its Group Chief Executive Officer, Mallam Mele Kyari, and exemplify a profound commitment to improving the quality of life for Nigerians.
One of the most notable interventions is the recently inaugurated state-of-the-art mammography centre at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia, in Nasarawa State.
Developed in partnership with TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, SAPETRO, CNOOC, and PRIME 130, the facility is equipped with the Senographe Pristina 3D mammography system and stereotactic biopsy capabilities.
This advanced centre can undertake over 120 examinations daily, significantly enhancing diagnostic capacity in the North Central region.
This is the second of such centres, following a similar facility at Garkida General Hospital, Adamawa.
These projects are part of NNPC Ltd.’s strategic push to improve access to early cancer detection and treatment, aiming to reduce Nigeria’s high cancer mortality rate.

The Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), Mr Bala Wunti, who was represented by the Head of Business Services, Mr. Sani Kabo, said the mammography centre was a symbol of NNPC Ltd.’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the quality of healthcare in Nigeria.
“We hope that under the stewardship of the state government, this facility will become a beacon of comfort and a critical resource for timely diagnosis and treatment of cancer,” Wunti said.
On his part, the Managing Director/Chief Executive and Country Chair of TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited (TUPNI), Mr Matthieu Bouyer, who was represented by the Acting General Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility, Mrs Tonye Osifo, said TotalEnergies was committed to addressing healthcare challenges through strategic partnerships.
“This mammography centre is among 84 infrastructural projects TotalEnergies has delivered since 2016. It signifies our active role in the global fight against cancer and reflects our alignment with the #WorkingWithCancer initiative, which supports recovery and retention for individuals affected by cancer,” Bouyer stated.
In addition, the company’s free cancer screening campaigns target 3,000 individuals across the six geopolitical zones, providing not only screenings but also health education, workshops, and consultations.
Tagged “Cancer Awareness and ZSX Screening, the campaign aimed at empowering individuals to recognise early symptoms, adopt preventive health measures, and better understand the importance of regular screenings.
The screening centres were set up in Kaduna, Rivers, Ondo, Benue, Imo, and Gombe to focus on breast, cervical, and prostate cancer, offering critical early detection support for at-risk populations.
Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Mrs Emmanuella Arukwe, emphasised the collective effort required to combat cancer, noting, “This campaign is about more than just screening; it’s about saving lives, building awareness, and creating pathways to preventive care for Nigerians who need it most.”
“In a country of over 200 million people, too many still lack access to the early detection tools that could make a life-saving difference. NNPC Foundation is dedicated to addressing this critical gap by bringing cancer screenings directly to communities. Early detection is crucial to improving survival rates, and this campaign is a vital step towards that goal,” she added.

The Union for International Cancer Control has introduced a new World Cancer Day theme for 2025-2027, which is “United by Unique”. World Cancer Day is held on February 2024 of every year and the new credo places people at the centre of care and their stories at the heart of the conversation.
Explaining the theme, the UICC on its website, said, “United in our goals, unique in our needs. That is the World Cancer Day credo that will be heard around the world in the lead up to and on 4 February 2025. Its meaning is simple: everyone has unique needs, unique perspectives, and a unique story to tell, yet people touched by cancer are united in a shared ambition to lower the cancer burden, to see cancer treated successfully, and to lead better lives with cancer.”
According to the international body, people-centred care accepts everyone for who they are, and it aims to deepen the connection not only between healthcare providers and patients but with whole communities.
“That’s why World Cancer Day counts on everyone – patients, loved ones, caregivers, friends, neighbours, practitioners, researchers, advocates, allies – to play an important role in the campaign. The campaign will explore different dimensions of people-centred cancer care and new ways of making a difference. It will offer a three-year journey from raising awareness to taking action,” it said.
Cancer remains one of the most formidable health challenges in Nigeria, with over 79,000 cancer-related deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The most common cancers affecting Nigerian men include prostate and liver cancer, while women are predominantly impacted by breast and cervical cancers.
Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer at NNPC Ltd., explained that NNPC Ltd.’ was thinking ahead by initiating the ‘Cancer Awareness and ZSX Screening’ aimed at 3,000 beneficiaries across the geo-political zones.

He described the oil giant’s cancer awareness campaign as an initiative aimed at countering the trend of late-stage diagnoses, which occur frequently due to limited access to screening facilities, cultural stigmas, and insufficient awareness.
“These free cancer screening campaigns reflect NNPC Ltd.’s broader mission to promote health equity and enhance the well-being of Nigerians across the country through its Foundation,” he had said.
Equally impactful is the “Eye Can See” programme, a JV initiative with Seplat Energy, which restores vision and hope to communities.
In the Ohaji/Egbema community of Imo State, the programme has distributed over 10,000 reading glasses, performed 639 eye surgeries, and provided essential medical consultations.
Commenting on the initiative, Bala Wunti, Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC’s Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), stated that the programme reflected NNPC Ltd.’s belief that corporate structures could and should play a vital role in societal development.
Further expanding this outreach, NNPC Ltd. and its partner, SNEPCo Production Sharing Contract (PSC), launched the Vision First Programme in Lagos.
Targeting the Ilaje community in Bariga, the initiative offers comprehensive healthcare services, including cardiovascular screenings, BMI assessments, and treatment for chronic diseases, alongside free eye care services.
However, NNPC’s interventions extend beyond healthcare. In collaboration with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), the company commissioned a state-of-the-art ICT centre at Bauchi State University.
The facility includes a Wi-Fi lounge, computer laboratories, and 3D printing labs, aimed at enhancing educational infrastructure and inspiring IT ecosystem growth in the North-East.
In addition, the NNPC Foundation’s Financial Literacy Programme has engaged over 284,000 corps members, equipping them with business skills and providing startup support.
These efforts, coupled with a 50% reduction in CAC registration fees for corps members, demonstrate NNPC’s commitment to youth empowerment and sustainable development.
Another laudable initiative involves a joint donation of N53 million by NNPC Ltd. and First Exploration & Production Limited to NGOs addressing healthcare, education, and economic growth.
Beneficiaries include organisations like the Irede Foundation, which provides artificial limbs to child amputees, and the Niola Cancer Care Foundation, which conducts colon cancer awareness and screening programs.
Also, NNPC Ltd and its Joint Venture partners in OML 18 – the Nigerian Content Development & Monitoring Board (NCDMB), SNEPCo, Total Energies EP Nigeria Ltd, Nigerian Agip Exploration Ltd, and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria (Deepwater) Ltd – donated a 2,300-seater state-of-the-art digital library to the Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, Bayelsa State.
With 100 computer systems, e-learning and research facilities, interactive smart boards, projectors, camcorders, e-books, e-journals, e-learning portal, and reading halls, the digital library was designed to promote ICT education and provide a conducive learning environment for students and researchers.
NNPC Ltd.’s unwavering commitment to healthcare and community development under Kyari’s leadership sets a benchmark for corporate Social Responsibility in Nigeria.
By addressing immediate needs and laying the groundwork for a healthier, more prosperous nation, the company continues to inspire and lead by example.
These interventions not only redefine corporate identity but also underscore the transformative power of strategic partnerships and holistic community engagement.

NAF Deploys Pumps in Desperate Push to Recover Submerged Aircraft After Crash Killed 25
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed multiple pumping machines to drain water around the submerged wreckage of its ATR 42-500 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as recovery teams intensify efforts to reach the main body of the plane that crashed on October 5, killing all 25 people on board.
The operation has been complicated by the depth of the wreckage, heavy mud and difficult underwater terrain in the swampy area of Ilaje Local Government Area, where the aircraft went down during a routine mission from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 16, and signed by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF Headquarters, the Air Force described the deployment of pumping equipment as a significant step towards accessing the main wreckage and advancing recovery operations.
The military said the aircraft remained deeply embedded in the riverbed, making it difficult for recovery personnel to reach the submerged sections and retrieve the remaining wreckage safely.
The pumping operation is part of a wider, multi-agency effort involving the NAF, specialist divers from the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB). The teams have also employed hydrographic surveys, satellite-based search imagery and mud excavation to identify and access areas of interest.
Additional aircraft components have already been recovered, but the authorities have not announced the complete recovery of the main fuselage or all materials required for the ongoing investigation.

The aircraft, designated NAF 931, crashed near the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda after air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 9:13am on October 5.
The NAF subsequently confirmed that all 25 people aboard — five crew members and 20 passengers — died in the accident. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The prolonged recovery operation has also heightened concerns among residents of Igbokoda about the possible environmental impact of the crash site, particularly the safety of local water sources.
Community members have complained about a persistent foul smell around the area, while local leaders have expressed fears that decomposing remains and possible aviation fuel contamination could affect the river system used by residents.
The traditional ruler of Igbokoda, Afolabi Odidiomo, has called for urgent environmental intervention, warning that the river system is connected to a water treatment facility in Aboto, about seven kilometres away.
The concerns have added urgency to calls for the recovery of the remaining wreckage and appropriate environmental checks. However, the extent of any contamination has not been conclusively established in the reports available.
The Air Force said Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme, visited Igbokoda on the directive of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, to engage community leaders and residents over their concerns.
During the visit, Ekwueme acknowledged the complaints and assured residents that the NAF would work to address the issues through appropriate channels.
The service also thanked community members for their patience and cooperation as personnel and partner agencies continue working under difficult conditions.
The Chief of the Air Staff has also reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting the families of those who died in the crash.
According to the NAF statement, applicable entitlements, including benevolent funds, scholarships for eligible children and other approved welfare benefits, would be processed for affected families.
The service said it remained in contact with the bereaved families and had established a dedicated helpline at its headquarters to provide information about the incident and available support.
Meanwhile, the recovery teams are expected to continue working to retrieve the remaining wreckage and relevant materials that could help investigators establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The NAF pledged to sustain the operation, support affected families and provide verified updates as significant developments emerge.

Rivers Police Remove DPO as Suspected Cultists’ Outpost Renovation Sparks Probe
The action followed the circulation of a viral video showing individuals suspected of belonging to a cult group celebrating at the renovated Abuloma Police Outpost in Port Harcourt alongside some police officers.
The incident has triggered an investigation into who financed the renovation, whether the project received the necessary approval and whether any police personnel breached professional standards by associating with the individuals involved.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, ordered a full investigation into the controversy, according to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe.
The two affected officers were reportedly queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of the investigation. The action is an administrative measure and does not, by itself, establish wrongdoing by either officer.

The controversy intensified after footage circulated online showing several individuals at the renovated facility. Some were reportedly wearing white shirts and black trousers, with red fez caps and black berets, while taking photographs with police officers and chanting slogans.
The online anti-cultism platform Naija Confra also circulated footage and photographs purportedly showing the gathering. Reports suggested that the event coincided with the anniversary of the Vikings confraternity, although the identities and affiliations of those involved have not been conclusively established by the police.
The investigation is expected to determine who organised and funded the renovation, which officers authorised the work and whether the individuals involved had any improper relationship with police personnel.
The command is also examining whether the incident compromised the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force or created the impression that suspected criminal groups could gain influence within law enforcement institutions.
The development has raised concerns about public confidence in policing and the safeguards required when private individuals or organisations contribute to the renovation of police facilities.
The police command clarified that it does not prohibit legitimate donations or community assistance for improving police infrastructure. However, such contributions must comply with established procedures and must not compromise police independence, security or professional standards.
The command cited Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund, while stressing that assistance to police facilities must be handled transparently and in accordance with the law.
It warned that financial contributions or infrastructure support would not exempt anyone from investigation if evidence of criminal conduct emerged.
The command further stated that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action, while evidence of criminal wrongdoing would be handled in accordance with the law.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the renovation and determine whether any individual or officer violated established rules.
The police urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist the investigation and support security operations across Rivers State.

Osun Murder: Three Arrested as Police Recover Weapons, Link Suspect to Earlier Killings
The Osun State Police Command has arrested three suspects over the alleged murder of Seun Ajayi in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, recovering an axe, two double-edged knives and three mobile phones during the investigation.
The arrests followed the fatal attack on Ajayi at a barbing salon in the Oja-Ale area of Ikire on October 3, 2026. Police said the investigation also uncovered allegations of threats against residents of a neighbouring community and a possible link between the principal suspect and an earlier deadly incident.
The suspects were identified as Nurudeen Ademakinwa, 30, also known as Igboya Aye-nuru; Agboluaje Usman, 23; and Awoniran Toheeb, 20.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed the arrests in a statement, explaining that the incident occurred at about 6pm on the day of the killing.

According to the police, Ajayi was having his hair cut with a friend when armed assailants allegedly stormed the salon and attacked them with dangerous weapons. Ajayi was reportedly macheted to death, while his companion escaped and reported the incident at the Ikire Divisional Police Headquarters at about 7:30pm.
Following the report, police launched an investigation that led to the arrest of Ademakinwa and the two other suspects during an intelligence-led operation on October 5.
Items recovered during the operation included one axe, two double-edged knives and three Android mobile phones. The police have not publicly detailed the forensic findings, if any, connecting each recovered item to the killing.
The command further alleged that Ademakinwa had sent threatening voice messages to some residents of Wasimi community, warning them to leave the area or face unspecified consequences.
Police also linked the principal suspect to an incident on August 24, 2026, involving officers attached to the Ikire Divisional Police Headquarters. According to the command, two passers-by were killed during an attack on the police operatives.
The alleged connection to the earlier incident forms part of the wider investigation. However, the claims have yet to be established in court, and the suspects remain entitled to the presumption of innocence.
Ojelabi said investigations were continuing and that the three suspects would be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction after the conclusion of the process.
The police have not announced any court judgment against the suspects. Further investigation is expected to establish the individual roles allegedly played by the three men, examine the recovered exhibits and determine whether sufficient evidence exists to prosecute them.
