Orire Kidnap: I Assured Principal’s Husband His Wife Would Return Alive — Senator Buhari
The Senator representing Oyo North Senatorial District, Abdulfatai Buhari, has revealed how he encouraged the husband of the abducted principal of the Government Technical College, Orita Aperin, Orire, Oyo State, during the period the victims were held captive by kidnappers.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Buhari recounted that Professor Alamo, whose wife, Mrs. Rachel Alamo, was among those abducted, repeatedly contacted him for updates and support throughout the ordeal.
Mrs. Alamo was one of the victims kidnapped alongside students in the attack that shocked Oyo State and drew nationwide concern.
According to the senator, about three weeks before the victims regained their freedom, Professor Alamo became visibly overwhelmed by fear, anxiety and uncertainty over his wife’s fate.
Buhari said he decided to visit him personally to offer words of encouragement and reassure him that his wife and the other abductees would return safely.

“I went to him, I talked to him and I explained to him that, ‘Look, your wife will not forgive you, even in the grave if she comes back and you’re not there,'” Buhari recalled.
“I assured him that nothing bad had happened to them and that they would come back safely.”
The lawmaker said he urged Professor Alamo to remain strong despite the emotional burden, stressing that losing hope would only deepen the trauma for the family.
Buhari further disclosed that on the day the victims were eventually released, Professor Alamo visited his residence in Ogbomoso, where they discussed the situation once again.
According to him, the meeting ended at about 3:30 p.m., after which Professor Alamo left.
Later that evening, Buhari said he began receiving messages claiming that the abducted students and other victims had been freed. However, he was initially reluctant to believe the reports because of the widespread circulation of unverified information during the period of the abduction.
He said his doubts were only dispelled after he came across a social media post by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirming the successful rescue of the victims.
The release of the abductees brought relief to their families, the Oyo State Government and residents, ending weeks of anxiety following the kidnapping incident that raised fresh concerns over insecurity and the safety of schools in the country.
The rescue operation has continued to attract commendation from various stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders and civil society organisations, while renewed calls have been made for stronger measures to protect educational institutions from criminal attacks.

Police Rescue Two Colombian Women Held Captive by Trafficking Syndicate in Lagos
LAGOS, Nigeria – Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the National Central Bureau (NCB) of INTERPOL, Lagos Annex, have rescued two Colombian nationals who were allegedly lured to Nigeria and held captive by a human trafficking syndicate. The victims, identified as Maria Camila Rodas Ortiz and Yuliet Fernanda Rios Mesa, were rescued following actionable intelligence received from INTERPOL-NCB, Bogotá, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. This operation marks a significant victory in the ongoing fight against transnational organized crime and human trafficking, demonstrating the effectiveness of international law enforcement cooperation between Nigeria and Colombia.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed the details of the operation in a statement released on Saturday, August 29, 2026. According to the statement, the two women were “fraudulently lured to Nigeria, held against their will, and had their travel documents confiscated” by some Chinese nationals, who are currently at large. Upon receipt of the intelligence from INTERPOL-NCB Bogotá, police operatives promptly launched a covert tracking operation, locating the hideout in Lagos where both victims were safely rescued on the same day. The statement read in part, “Upon receipt of the intelligence, police operatives promptly launched a covert tracking operation, locating the hideout in Lagos where both victims were safely rescued on the same day.” According to police, the suspects fled the location when they noticed the approaching operatives. “The fleeing suspects abandoned the location upon sighting the approaching team, and efforts have been intensified to track down and arrest all members of the syndicate,” the statement said. The police have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle the trafficking network.

The police said the rescued Colombian nationals are currently in safe custody and receiving necessary support, including medical care and counseling services to help them recover from their traumatic experience. The statement further disclosed that the Colombian Embassy in Accra is working in close collaboration with the National Central Bureau to secure hotel accommodations for the victims and arrange emergency travel documents to ensure their safe return to Bogotá. The embassy’s involvement underscores the importance of diplomatic cooperation in handling cross-border trafficking cases and ensuring that victims are not re-victimized by bureaucratic hurdles.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents within the country, while deepening collaboration with international law enforcement partners to combat cross-border crimes. The statement said Disu “reaffirms the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents within the country, while deepening collaboration with international law enforcement partners to combat cross-border crimes.” The police said efforts had been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects and dismantle the trafficking network.
This rescue operation highlights the growing challenge of transnational human trafficking in Nigeria, which serves as both a source, transit, and destination country for victims. According to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Nigeria has seen an increase in cases involving foreign nationals being trafficked into the country for forced labor, sexual exploitation, and other forms of modern slavery. The involvement of Chinese nationals in this case points to the international nature of trafficking syndicates operating in the country. The police have called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies, as community cooperation remains vital in combating these crimes.

IMAX Lekki Attack: Two Dead as Machete-Wielding Man Storms Cinema in Lagos
IMAX Lekki Attack: Two Dead as Machete-Wielding Man Storms Cinema in Lagos
LAGOS, Nigeria – Panic erupted at the IMAX Cinemas in Lekki Phase 1 on Friday night, August 29, 2026, when a man armed with a machete and a knife stormed the popular entertainment hub, leaving two people dead in a chaotic sequence of violence that has reignited urgent questions about security at public venues in Lagos. The assailant, described by police as appearing destitute and possibly under the influence of illicit substances, was denied entry by security guards at the cinema’s main entrance. What followed was a brutal attack that claimed the life of a security guard and ultimately led to the suspect being mobbed to death by an enraged crowd of patrons and passersby, according to the Lagos State Police Command.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the incident unfolded shortly after 7:00 PM, a peak period when the cinema was filled with families, couples, and groups of friends attending evening screenings. The suspect arrived at the cinema entrance carrying both a machete and a knife, raising immediate suspicion, and security personnel stopped him and refused him entry, triggering an angry verbal exchange. Witnesses said the man suddenly lunged at the guards, stabbing one repeatedly, and that security guard succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A second security officer was also wounded during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment, though authorities have not yet released details on his condition. As the chaos spread, bystanders and other patrons overpowered the suspect, beating him fatally, and he died before police arrived at the scene. Screaming moviegoers rushed out of the auditoriums and exits, with some locking themselves inside restrooms and screening rooms until the situation was brought under control.

Confirming the tragic events, SP Adebisi Abimbola, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, told journalists that investigations are in full swing. She stated that two people have been confirmed dead—the security guard who was stabbed to death and the suspect, who was mobbed by the crowd—adding that the identity of the assailant has not yet been established, and that police are looking into the precise sequence of events leading to his death. She further confirmed that the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the IMAX cinema has been taken into custody for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have confirmed that they are actively reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the cinema premises to reconstruct the exact events. The police said the video evidence will help investigators determine whether the attacker acted alone or had any accomplices who may have fled the scene. Investigators are also probing how the man—carrying two deadly weapons—managed to reach the cinema entrance unchallenged, raising concerns about perimeter security at high-traffic leisure centres. The detention of the cinema’s Chief Security Officer suggests authorities are examining whether internal protocols were followed or breached.
This incident has cast a harsh spotlight on security preparedness at entertainment and recreational facilities across Lagos. With the state being Nigeria’s commercial and social hub, venues like cinemas, malls, and restaurants attract thousands of visitors daily, making them potential targets for lone-wolf attackers. Security experts have called for mandatory metal detectors and bag checks at all entry points, better-trained private security personnel with crisis de-escalation skills, quicker police response times to prevent mob justice, which often compounds tragedies, and increased surveillance infrastructure in public gathering spaces.
As of the time of this report, the Lagos State Police Command has not released the identities of either the slain security guard or the suspect. The injured second guard remains hospitalized, and his condition is yet to be made public. The police have assured the public that all circumstances surrounding the deaths will be thoroughly investigated, and further updates will be provided as new information emerges, with SP Abimbola stating that anyone found to have contributed to this tragic outcome, whether by action or negligence, will be held accountable.
