Railway workers give FG 21-day ultimatum over poor welfare, Chinese drivers
Railway workers are poised for a showdown with the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and by extension the Federal Government over poor condition of service, their inability to take over the driving of the new Lagos-Ibadan trains from the Chinese contractors, among other issues.
Indeed, they have given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to address all their grievances or face an industrial action.
The two in-house unions, Nigeria Union of Railway workers and Senior Staff Association, gave the ultimatum in a joint statement obtained by Newstrends on Saturday.
They said the decision was taken after a meeting of the unions’ leaders with representatives of the NRC management at Ebute Meta, Lagos, headquarters of the corporation. They declared the meeting held on Tuesday November 2, 2021 as deadlocked.
The workers in the statement signed by Segun Esan and Jibrin Kadiri, the Secretary General of the NUR, and Secretary of the SSA respectively, expressed their opposition of the Chinese continued hold on the driving of the Lagos-Ibadan Trains Service.
“The unions have demanded from the management to collect the driving of the LITS from the Chinese who, in total aberration to the norms and ethos governing train driving in Nigeria, still hold on to driving the LITS trains beyond the warranty/guaranty period,” they stated.
The unions asked the NRC management “to ensure that the Chinese are barred from driving the LITS with immediate effect and a new regime of warranty/guaranty of the LITS service be demanded.”
They also decried the manner in which their welfare package was being handled in the last six years by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and vowed to adopt a forceful approach, going forward.
They stated, “The unions, without mincing words, expressed utmost displeasure and regrets over the manner the Hon. Minister of Transportation has been so unconcerned with the demand of the workers for enhanced salary.
“The unions recalled that the agitation for enhanced salary has been on for the past six years and the Hon. minister has tactically evaded all entreaties of the leadership of the two in-house unions to meet him on the plight of the workers as occasioned by the poor salary regime that is obtainable in the corporation and which remains the poorest salary regime ever under the federal ministry of transport.
“The unions have declared that tactics and strategies would be changed towards achieving all-important salary enhancement for the workers of the corporation as peaceful and constructive methodologies explored by the Unions have failed.”
The statement also said, “As of today and now, the Corporation has no standard condition of service and this we have pointed out to the management with the matching demand that the reworked standard condition of service which was placed before the Board should be reviewed and approved for applicability without any further delay. The management has promised to escalate it to the Board with a memo soon.”
The unions also commented on the last terrorist attack on the Abuja-Kaduna standard train, with a demand for a compulsory insurance policy for all train crew members and passengers.
“We have requested individual insurance for all the train crew, passengers and the entire workers of the corporation who may be exposed to such deadly hazards in the course of their duties. This demand is made without any prejudice to the existing group life assurance scheme (GLAS) for the workers the status of which is still lurked in obscurity to the unions,” the statement added.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has deployed 4,002 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines for the Saturday governorship election in Ondo State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, said this on Friday in Akure, the state capital.
She said the commission had also deployed additional 812 BVAS machines as reserve in case any of the deployed machines developed faults.
“We are ready. We have created enough voter awareness through the multiple channels we deployed for the exercise. We have engaged, recruited our ad-hoc staff, SPOs, presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers,” Babalola said.
She said over 30,000 security personnel had been deployed for the election and briefed on the mode of operation as part of efforts to ensure a hitch-free election.

She said, “The security agencies have given us assurance. We trained them to be professional and be committed to the job they engage in.
“We also taught them our process. You know, when you don’t know someone else’s process, some things you think are not right, some things you think are wrong. So we have trained them and they have cascaded this training to their commands.”
She assured that the commission would activate the Registration Area Centres (RACs) earlier than usual to ensure early deployment of voting materials to the polling units.
“Most vehicles are on their way to the RAC because we are going to activate RACs very early. We don’t want to activate RACs in the night so that they would have settled in and they’ll be ready for the election tomorrow (Saturday).
“Our people are on the field now and we are just awaiting feedback for them to arrive at their various destinations,” Babalola said.

The Nigerian Military has said that a new terror group has been identified in the country.
The Defence Headquarters on Thursday morning said the group is in operation in Kebbi and Sokoto States.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, revealed that this group is affiliated with jihadi organizations in Mali and Niger.

A Life of Impact: Celebrating Alhaja Fausat Fadeke Atoke Bankole

Alhaja Fausat Fadeke Atoke Bankole, a remarkable woman, left an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew her. Although she may not have had formal education, her wisdom, kindness, and entrepreneurial spirit inspired countless individuals.
Her passing leaves a void, but her legacy endures.
Born into a humble family, Alhaja Fausat’s determination and resilience shaped her future. She started very early in life as she ventured into business, leveraging her natural talent for herbal remedies.
Her expertise in traditional medicine earned her respect and recognition within her community.
As a recognition of her commitment to her profession, she was in 2019 honoured as APESIN of Alagbo of Ibadanland by her professional body.
Her successful business acumen provided for her family and created endless opportunities for others.
Alhaja Fausat’s commitment to community service was unwavering. As a dedicated member of the Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria, she actively participated in various charitable initiatives.
Her selflessness and generosity inspired others to follow suit. She provided support to the less fortunate, offering guidance, shelter, and financial assistance whenever needed.
And as a mark of honour, the Oyo State chapter of Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria took over her burial and ensured that all Islamic injunctions pertaining to burial were dutifully carried out.
As a mother, her greatest joy was her family. She leaves behind a loving husband, Alhaji Abdu Waheed Bankole and children among whom are Mogaji (Alhaji) Abdu Akeem Adewale Bankole, Mr Sharafadeen Adebayo Bankole, Mrs. Ahmad Amidat Olaide and Mrs. Rufai Rukayat Adeola. Her grandchildren affectionately called her Grandma or Iya Agbo.
Her death will for very long time remained a mystery to some of her acquaintances as nobody expected her to leave at the time left.
Alhaja Fausat passed away at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan after a brief illness surrounded by loved ones and family members (both nuclear and extended).
The outpouring of love and respect was evident during the 8th day Fidau prayers, held at Aweni Arena, Oke-Ado, Ibadan.
Hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects, sharing stories of Alhaja Fausat’s kindness, generosity, and impact.
Those who knew Alhaja Fausat described her as a pillar of strength, wisdom and a generous benefactor to her community.
Her legacy extends beyond her immediate family. She touched the lives of countless individuals through her business, community service, and kindness.
Alhaja Fausat Fadeke Atoke Bankole’s life serves as a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and compassion.
Rest in peace, Alhaja Fausat Fadeke Atoke Bankole. Your life was a blessing to many, and your memory will continue to inspire generations to come.
