  • Kona declares electric car of the year

Hyundai Creta, a compact sport utility vehicle, has emerged the Nigerian car of the year, edging out two strong contenders for the coveted crown, Toyota Corolla and Kia Rio.

This was announced on Wednesday night by the  Nigerian Auto journalists Association (NAJA) at its 2021 Auto Industry Awards held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

This is the second time in three years the Creta launched into the Nigerian market in 2016 would be winning the award. The compact SUV had earlier made a history by winning the prestigious car-of-the-year award in 2018.

The 2021 NAJA event also featured the crowning of Nigeria’s first ever electric car, the Hyundai Kona, as the Electric-Car-of-the-Year.

The colourful event was attended by the leading stakeholders of the nation’s automobile and road transport sector, including the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, and representative of the Director General of National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Jelani Aliyu.

Journey to 2021 NAJA Awards started with nomination of finalists by jury members of the Nigerian Auto Journalists Association. While the ultimate winners emerged from voting by motoring journalists drawn from the nation’s leading print, electronic and digital media.

Head, Sales and Marketing at Hyundai Motors Nigeria, Mr Gaurav Vashisht, reacting through the company’s statement, commended the organizers (NAJA) for putting up the prestigious award and for finding the Hyundai Creta and Kona worthy of honours.

Vashisht described the two award-winning vehicles (Creta and Kona) as a testimony of Hyundai’s core vision of always developing high-quality vehicles.

He said, “We are honoured to again win the most prestigious automotive award in Nigeria. We dedicate the awards to our teeming customers and lovers of Hyundai brand across the country.

“We thank the motoring media and jurors who have chosen Creta as the Nigerian Car of the Year 2021 and crowned the Kona as the Nigerian Electric Car of the Year.

“With innovation at its core, Hyundai is committed to continuously make global quality cars with cutting edge technologies and fortify the Hyundai brand, caring for our customers in Nigeria and globally.”

Currently selling in Nigeria is a new generation 2021 Creta created for an unparalleled driving experience for customers across sub-Sahara Africa, including Nigeria, according to the auto company.

Transformed into the ultimate subcompact SUV for any terrain, the redesigned and more powerful Creta comes with a choice of three engines. The smart stream G1.5 (maximum power of 115ps/6,300rpm and maximum torque of 14.7kgf.m/4,500rpm) and the Kappa 1.4T-GDI (140ps/6,000rpm and 24.7kgf.m/1,500-3,200rpm) are both petrol engines, providing better fuel economy on the roads.

Offering more choice is the diesel U2 1.5 VGT (DSL) engine, which has a maximum power of 115ps/4,000rpm and a maximum torque of 25.5kgf.m/1,500-2,750rpm, it states.

It also notes that inside and out, the new Creta is longer and wider than its first-generation predecessor. Due to its 2610mm-long wheelbase and extra amounts of legroom, headroom and shoulder room, the Creta’s cabin is able to accommodate five persons more comfortably than ever.

In addition, its ergonomically sculpted seats use multi-density foam to provide varying degrees of firmness and softness that compensate for uneven weight distribution on the seat cushion, backrest, the side bolsters, and headrest.

The Creta SUV is said to offer multiple levels of protection, including its ultra-rigid monologue steel body shell that is designed to safely absorb impact forces. Ample stopping power is provided by 16-in front discs and ABS, which are standard equipment.

Dual front depowered airbags, curtain airbags and front row thorax protection are also available as part of the six-airbags option, according to the Hyundai’s statement.

Appeal court takes over NURTW case as NIC withdraws

The National Industrial Court has withdrawn from a case involving Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin, Board of Trustees chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa’s ambition to return as president of the union over lack of jurisdiction.

The industrial court’s decision was made to avoid conflict with the Court of Appeal, where the matter is already being heard.

Before the NIC announced its decision to hands-off the case, the defendants’ counsel, Mr. O.I. Olorundare SAN, had informed the court that the matter is currently before the Court of Appeal, Abuja division, and that the industrial court could not continue to adjudicate on the same matter.

The counsel cited authorities to support his claim, adding that the National Industrial Court does not have concurrent jurisdiction with the Court of Appeal.

The presiding judge, O.O. Oyewunmi, struck out the case, stating that the Appeal Court had taken over the matter and that the Industrial Court must respect the hierarchy of courts.

Alhaji Yasin and six others took the case to the Appeal Court, challenging the decision of the industrial court recognising a delegates’ conference held on May 24, 2023, where Baruwa was proclaimed as President of the union for a second term in office.

With the latest NIC judgement, both parties will now proceed to defend their positions at the Court of Appeal and await the final judgement.

FRSC blames traffic violation as 19 passengers burnt to death in Okene Bypass accident

A total of 19 people were burnt to death in a tanker-bus collision on Sunday April 28 on Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State.

The collision that specifically occurred on Okene Bypass reportedly led to an explosion, trapping a total of 22 passengers in the inferno.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in a statement which gave these details said the crash was largely caused by traffic rules violation.

It added that its emergency rescue team deployed in the area battled the situation for three hours.

Part of statement read, “The crash investigation report revealed that the crash involved two vehicles comprising a Dangote truck bearing the following registration details NSH680YJ, and a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number KMC455ZE.

“The Toyota Hiace bus loaded from Kano was on its lane on the highway when the Dangote truck driver who drove all the way from Port Harcourt wrongfully overtook a vehicle and collided head-on with the bus.

“The impact of the collision resulted in a fire inferno that burnt the victims to death.

According to the report, the crash which was caused by route violation ‘One-way’ and wrongful overtaking, involved 22 people all male.

“Unfortunately, 19 people out of the 22 victims were killed and one injured.

“The remaining two victims who got rescued by the FRSC operatives without injuries survived the crash because they complied with traffic regulations on compulsory use of seatbelt.

“The corpses of the dead victims have been deposited at Okene General Hospital.

The statement signed by the FRSC spokesman, Jonas Agwu, an Assistant Corps Marshal, recalled that the Corps Marshal of the commission, Dauda Biu, at a press conference last week Thursday “warned against traffic violations citing instances where they resulted in avoidable crashes with fire outbreak, leading to wanton loss of precious lives and destruction to properties.

“As a result of that he had earlier emphasised on the need for maximum penalty for these drivers.

Dauda Biu reaffirmed the resolution of the Corps to continue its ongoing prosecution of drivers who by their actions cause road traffic crashes in Nigeria, noting that the driver of the truck involved in the Okene crash will not be an exception.

“As such, he called on the judiciary, leadership of transport unions and other relevant stakeholders in the road transportation sector to join hands with the Corps towards restoring sanity through speedy and effective prosecution.”
