Islamic teacher remanded for defiling 6-year-old Pupil
A 24-year-old Islamic teacher, Mosediq Toheeb, was on Wednesday remanded by a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court for sexually assaulting a six-year-old pupil at a Quranic school.
The court presided over by Magistrate Patrick Nwaka, remanded the defendant who was arraigned on two counts of sexual violation preferred against him by the state police command.
The police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the incident happened on May 7, 2023, at the University of Lagos Central Mosque.
According to Nurudeen, that was the second time that the teacher would defile the child.
The victim’s mother told the court that on the day of the incident, the child returned home from school with blood stains on her clothes and when asked what happened, she told her that her class teacher took her to a separate classroom, tied her mouth and hands and defiled her with a stern warning that she should not tell anybody.

According to the prosecutor, the offences committed are punishable under Sections 261 and 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.
The charge read in part, “That you, Mosediq Toheeb, on May 7, 2023, around 4pm at UNILAG Central Mosque, in the Yaba Magisterial District, did sexually assault one six-year-old female (name withheld), who lives at No. 26, Femi Adebule Street, Fola Agoro, in the Somolu area of Lagos, by inserting your finger into her vagina and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”
Nurudeen prayed the court to remand the defendant for 30 days pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
Toheeb’s lawyer, Patrick Onochie, pleaded with the court to consider the defendant who he claimed was a final year student of the University of Lagos and would be starting his final examinations in two weeks.
Magistrate Nwaka did not take the plea of the defendant but ordered that he should be remanded.
He said there was no document before the court to show that the defendant was a student and in his final year or about to begin an examination.
He ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice and copies of his school documents attached to the case file.
He adjourned the case till June 19, 2023.

The police have asked Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan to cancel her planned Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial district of Kogi State.
The State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye made this known on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya.
According to the statement, the Kogi police boss said the rally is against the proclamation on ban on political gathering by the state government issued on Monday.
The statement said, “Following the intelligence report on security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all forms of Rally and procession by the Kogi State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Police Command has called on the organisers of planned rally at Okene to cancel such event in the interest of the peace in Kogi State.

“The call for cancellation becomes necessary, noting that intelligence reveals that some hoodlums plan to hijack the process and cause disturbance of peace in the State. The Command cannot afford to jeopardize the existing peace the State is currently enjoying.
“In view of the security threat received on the planned rally, the Kogi State Police Command is therefore advising the organisers to cancel the event so as to avoid any breakdown of law and order in the State. As the Command will not hesitate to apply the full wrath of law on any one who causes disturbance of peace and order in the State.”
Despite the Monday proclamation by the state government banning political gathering or rallies, Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to continue with her “homecoming”, adding that she’s only coming to the state to celebrate Eid Fitr with her constituents.

Lightning strike kills herder, 12 cows in Kaduna
A tragic incident occurred in Southern Kaduna as a herder, identified as Ibrahim Likit, and at least 12 cows were struck dead by lightning.
The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2025, in Matuak Giwa, Bondon District, Moro’a Chiefdom, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to the Village Head of Matuak Giwa, Simon Ayuba, the young herder was seeking shelter from the rain alongside his cattle when a thunderstrike hit, killing them instantly.
“The herder, along with 12 cows, d!ed on the spot. It was a tragic occurrence that has left the community in shock,” Ayuba said.

Confirming the incident, Mallam Tanko Isiyaka, the Ardo of Bondon District, disclosed that the deceased herder hailed from Bauchi State.
He expressed sadness over the incident and called for prayers and support for the bereaved family as the victim was laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
The occurrence has since stirred grief and sympathy among residents of the area.

A woman, Hajiya Fatima Ahmed Usman, her husband, Alhaji Muhammad Usman, alongside their four other relations reportedly lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident which occurred at Ahoko bridge, along the Abuja-Lokoja highway.
A witness said the incident occurred around 12:34 pm on Sunday, the eidfitr day.
He said the couple and the four others left Toto town in Nasarawa State in an unmarked Honda car to attend a burial of one of their relatives at Kotonkarfe when the accident happened.
He said the car veered off the road and somersaulted into a ditch after a trailer hit the vehicle from behind, adding that all the six occupants died on the spot.
Our reporter learnt that Muhammed Usman was the chairmanship aspirant in the November, 2024, Toto LGA election in the area.
However, the remains of the deceased were evacuated into an ambulance to Toto for burial.
