Liverpool ‘submits $33m defender bid’ as Kylian Mbappé breaks silence on next transfer move

Liverpool has reportedly made an offer for a center-back, while Reds-linked winger and PSG superstar Kylian Mbappé has been discussing future transfer plans.

After going three points clear at the top of the Premier League by beating Newcastle 4-2 on Monday night, Liverpool will now turn its attention to the third round of the FA Cup. Having won the competition in 2022, the Reds mustered a meek title defense last year by exiting in the fourth round at the hands of Brighton, but they will do well to even reach that stage here after being hit with one of the hardest possible draws away to Arsenal.

Jürgen Klopp will face a dilemma over the strength of his side, knowing that he’ll likely have to field some big names to stand a chance of progressing but also juggling his other priorities. Liverpool has the first leg of a League Cup semi-final against Fulham coming next week, but does at least have the following weekend off as part of the Premier League’s winter break.

Indeed, it won’t be back in top-flight action until January 21 when it travels to Bournemouth. But with the Arsenal and Fulham matches separated by a matter of days, there’s no respite from the rotation dilemmas that dogged the festive period.

Elsewhere in the third round of the cup, Manchester City and Chelsea host second-tier opposition in Huddersfield and Preston, Manchester United heads to third-tier Wigan on Monday night, and Spurs hosts Burnley in an all-Premier League clash. In the meantime, here are the latest Liverpool.com stories you can’t afford to miss.

Liverpool ‘submits $33m defender bid’

Liverpool has tabled a $33m (£26m/€30m) offer for Sporting center-back Gonçalo Inácio, according to Portuguese source Jorge das Transferências. The Reds are described as the team most interested in the 22-year-old as it stands.

It’s worth noting that Inácio’s current deal, signed in August, reportedly includes a release clause worth $66m (£52m/€60m), so Klopp’s side is effectively trying to sign him for half-price.

Kylian Mbappé breaks silence on next transfer move amid Liverpool links

Kylian Mbappé insists he hasn’t made a decision on his next move amid renewed links with Liverpool. Le Parisien reported this week that the Reds are among his suitors as he potentially nears the end of his contract at PSG.

Mbappé has the option to extend his deal with PSG, but there’s certainly no guarantee that he’ll choose to do so, with the forward now free to talk to European suitors. Quoted by Marca, the 25-year-old insists that his future is anything but a hot topic inside the Parc des Princes.

La Liga President confirms Mbappe to Real Madrid move

La Liga president Javier Tebas says Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe will join Real Madrid next season.

The 25-year-old France captain announced last week he is leaving PSG at the end of his contract this summer, without specifying his destination, and Madrid are poised to sign him after years of failed attempts.

“He’s Madrid’s next season, yes,” Tebas told Argentine daily sports newspaper Ole on Monday. “If they’ve signed a five-year deal, he has five seasons of opportunity (to win the Champions League).”

Mbappe is set to join a star-studded Madrid team led by Brazil’s Vinicius Junior and England international Jude Bellingham.

Los Blancos strolled to the Spanish title and are in the Champions League final at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund on June 1.

”(Mbappe) is one of the best players in the world, but Vinicius and Bellingham are there too, Madrid will have a great squad,” continued Tebas. “But that does not guarantee you will win leagues.”

Mbappe is PSG’s all-time record scorer with 256 goals, having joined the club from Monaco in 2017 for 180 million euros ($194 million).

With PSG he won six French league titles but failed to earn Champions League glory, finishing as runners-up to Bayern Munich in 2020.

By joining record 14-time winners Real Madrid, Mbappe would increase his chances of finally earning club football’s most prestigious trophy.

Palmer scores as Chelsea beat Brighton to go sixth

Cole Palmer’s brilliant season with Chelsea continued as his goal helped the Blues boost their European qualification hopes with a win at Brighton in the Premier League.

Palmer netted his 22nd league strike of the season, meeting Marc Cucurella’s cross with a looping header into the far corner in the 34th minute.

And the visitors added a second 14 minutes after the restart when Christopher Nkunku coolly dispatched Malo Gusto’s cutback.

Having been so dominant Chelsea gifted Brighton a way back into the game when substitute Reece James – playing just his second match in 2024 after coming back from a long-term injury – was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Joao Pedro.

Chelsea moved up to sixth in the table and currently sit in a Europa League spot.

They will guarantee a place in Europe next season if they claim a point at home to Bournemouth on the final day.

Brighton fell to a seventh defeat in ninth matches but remain in 10th place.
