Soldier, two others killed in fresh herdsmen attacks on Benue communities

Fresh attacks on two communities in Benue state by rampaging armed herders have claimed the lives of three persons.

Those killed in the attack are a soldier and two farmers while several other locals were injured during the separate attacks.

The attacks were carried out in Ochumekwu and Udedeku communities in Apa and Kwande Local Government Areas, LGAs, of Benue State respectively.

The soldier was killed during a patrol in the community by troops of the military spike operation, code named Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS.

The troops came under attack during the bandits raid on Udedeku community of Maav-Ya, Mkoonmom district of Mbaikyor Council Ward, Turan Jato-Aka in Kwande LGA.

The two other victims were also killed during the raid.

The troops were deployed to the state to stem the activities of armed herdsmen and bandits terrorising the locals.

Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that the armed herdsmen, who had already taken over five Council Wards in Turan and the three Wards in Ikyurav Ya, invaded Udedeku community where they ambushed the victims and slaughtered them like animals.

He said, “apart from the two persons they killed like animals, as you can see from the pictures, several other persons also sustained injuries in the attack.

“At the moment all the five Council Wards in Turan and the three in Ikyurav Ya, in Kwande East are occupied by the Fulani herdsmen.

“The people have fled their homes to seek refuge elsewhere for fear of being killed by well armed herdsmen.”

Confirming the attack on his troops, the Force Commander of OPWS, Maj. Gen. Sunday Igbinomwanhia informed that three of the marauders were also killed in the offensive and several of their arms recovered.

He said “the suspected armed herdsmen attacked the soldiers deployed in Ochumekwu, Apa LGA. They killed one personnel, and wound one.

“The troops in response killed three and injured several of them. They recovered one AK47 rifle and rounds of ammunition from them.”

On the incident in Kwande LGA, he said “OPWS is currently carrying out a clearance operation to flush out suspected armed foreign herders who have invaded the LGA.”

Woman, 30, remanded over alleged robbery of police officer in Makurdi

A magistrate court in Makurdi, the Benue capital, has remanded a 30-year-old woman identified as Comfort Yughemba for gross misconduct on Tuesday.

The suspect was charged for allegedly resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, robbery, raising a false alarm, and inciting breach of public peace.

Christy Ikpe, the presiding magistrate, who did not take the suspects’ plea for want of jurisdiction, adjourned the case till June 19 for further mention.

Inedu Friday, the police prosecutor, said the case was reported by Akor Success, an officer at ‘B’ Division Police Station, High Level, Makurdi, on May 5.

Friday said Tyokaan Maureen, from Apir junction, federal medical centre, Makurdi, lodged a complaint against Yughemba, who lived behind Towering tots primary school.

Upon arrival, she resisted arrest and forcefully stole a N150,000 cell phone from the officer.

The prosecutor added that Yughemba raised a false alarm, accusing the officer of being a kidnapper, and called on people to apprehend him. She then fled with the phone to an unknown destination.

During police investigation, she was arrested in connection with the alleged offences, which contravene Sections 171, 170, 95, and 146 of the Penal Code.

The prosecutor prayed for another date for mention, as investigation is still ongoing.

The court’s decision marks a significant step in addressing the alleged crimes and promoting public safety.

Kano Hisbah arrest 20 men, women for bathing together

The Islamic police force, Hisbah, in Kano State announced the arrest of 20 residents, both men and women, for bathing together.

The Kano Hisbah Board explained that officers from Operation Kau Da Badala conducted the arrests at a leisure center on Ring Road in Kano, the state capital, following complaints from the community.

As reported by the Daily Trust, Dr. Mujahidin Aminuddin Abubakar, the Deputy Commandant General of the board, noted that this behavior breached Hisbah law, which prohibits men and women from bathing together.

Expressing concern over the act, which according to him, could have been replaced with a more beneficial activity that would fetch them rewards from the Almighty, Abubakar said that upon completion of investigation, the arrested persons would be punished accordingly.

He called on parents and guardians to keep a close eye on their children’s movements.

A pastor of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) and two others were killed by terrorists in Majure village, Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.

The Nation gathered that over 50 terrorists invaded the community on motorcycles, causing panic by firing shots and triggering a stampede.

The terrorists also abducted 20 people, mostly women and children, and transported them to an unknown destination in a Sharon bus.

The victims were said to have been killed when they were working on their farms which were close to the church.
