106 terrorists killed, 103 hostages rescued in one week – DHQ

106 terrorists have been killed by troops of the Nigerian army in the last week, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has disclosed.

It also stated that 164 other terrorists were arrested and 103 hostages were rescued in different operations across the country in the same period.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, made the disclosure on Thursday in Abuja while giving an update on the operations of the military across the country.

According to Buba, the troops recovered 125 assorted weapons and 1,522 ammunition, comprising 41 AK47 rifles, one PKT gun, 24 locally fabricated guns, 28 Dane guns, and one pump action gun.

He said the troops also recovered 755 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 623 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 102 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm, 63 live cartridges, and 247 empty cases of 7.62mm ammo.

“Others are 22 AK47 magazines, one Baofeng radio, 22 vehicles, 31 motorcycles, two bicycles, 10 mobile phones, and the sum of N2.9 million, amongst other items,’’ he said.

In the North East, Buba said the troops of Operation Hadin Kai recorded successes leading to the surrendering of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists and their families within the week.

He said a total of 1,760 BH/ISWAP terrorist fighters and family members, comprising 117 male adults, 345 adult females, and 628 children, surrendered within the week.

According to him, troops neutralised 41 terrorists, arrested 27 suspects, rescued 16 kidnapped hostages, and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition.

In the North Central, Buba said the troops of Operations Safe Haven and Whirl Stroke eliminated 12 insurgents, arrested 39 violent extremists, and rescued 39 kidnapped hostages within the week.

He said the troops also recovered several arms and ammunition, comprising 21 AK47 rifles, 14 fabricated pistols, 15 Dane guns, 285 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, and 200 rounds of 7.62mm NATO.

In the North West, Buba said the troops of Operation Hadarin Daji neutralised 22 terrorists, arrested 23 terrorists, rescued 32 kidnapped hostages, and recovered a cache of arms.

Under Operation Whirl Punch, he said the troops neutralised eight terrorists, arrested 20 suspects, and rescued 12 kidnapped hostages, as well as recovered arms and the sum of N2.9 million, amongst others.

In the Niger Delta, Buba said the troops of Operation Delta Safe had maintained momentum against the activities of crude oil thieves, destroying several illegal refining sites and recovering stolen products.

He said the troops recovered 802,200 litres of stolen crude oil, 121,900 litres of illegally refined AGO, and 450 litres of DPK within the week.

According to him, troops discovered and destroyed 20 dugout pits, 24 boats, and 34 storage tanks, as well as 56 cooking ovens, two speedboats, 14 pumping machines, 18 drums, and 22 vehicles and motorcycles.

He added that a total of 36 illegal refining sites were destroyed, while a total of 32 suspected oil thieves and other violent extremists were apprehended in the region.

In the South East, the defence spokesman said the troops of Operation UDO KA neutralised three terrorists, arrested 22 violent extremists, and rescued four kidnapped hostages.

“Troops recovered one pump action gun, 31 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 23 cartridges, one Baofeng radio, and six mobile phones, among others.

“All recovered items, arrested suspects, and rescued hostages were handed over to the relevant authority for further action,’’ he said.

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has filed a motion before the Federal High Court seeking to quash criminal charges instituted against him by the Department of State Services (DSS), describing the case as incompetent, politically motivated, and a gross abuse of court process.

The application challenges Charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/99/2026, which is scheduled for hearing on February 25, 2026, before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.

In the motion dated February 18, El-Rufai is asking the court to strike out or dismiss the charge, arguing that it discloses no offence known to law and fails to establish a prima facie case. He is also seeking an order discharging him entirely from the suit.

Beyond the request for dismissal, the former governor is demanding ₦2 billion in compensation against the DSS, alleging the unconstitutional use of criminal proceedings to harass, intimidate, and embarrass him.

According to court documents, the motion is anchored on 17 grounds, including claims that the charge cites offences not recognised under Nigerian law, lacks evidentiary backing, suffers from duplicity, and was filed without proper prosecutorial competence. El-Rufai also alleged bad faith, selective prosecution, and political persecution.

The application further argues that the prosecution violates several provisions of the 1999 Constitution, including Section 36(5) on the presumption of innocence, Section 36(11) on the right against self-incrimination, and Section 36(12), which requires that criminal offences must be clearly defined in written law. He also cited alleged breaches of Sections 39 and 40, which guarantee freedom of expression and freedom of association.

El-Rufai’s legal team confirmed that the Director-General of the DSS was formally notified of the application through a letter dated February 18, detailing the filing and listing his legal representatives.

The DSS had earlier fixed February 25 to arraign El-Rufai over alleged cybercrime and national security breaches. The agency filed a three-count charge, accusing the former governor of unlawfully intercepting the telephone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

According to the DSS, the alleged acts contravene provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, as well as the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

One of the counts relates to statements allegedly made by El-Rufai during a live interview on Arise TV, where he claimed to have overheard directives concerning his detention. He linked the claim to what he described as an attempted arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport following his return from Cairo, Egypt.

As of the time of filing this report, the DSS has not issued a public response to the motion. Legal observers say the case raises critical questions about national security prosecutions, cybercrime laws, and the balance between state power and fundamental rights in Nigeria.

Troops of the Nigerian Army escorting the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Bemgha Koughna, have repelled an attempted ambush and neutralised five suspected Lakurawa terrorists near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State.

The incident occurred as the GOC’s convoy was moving through a volatile forest corridor en route to visit frontline troops deployed in the state. Security sources said the convoy came under intense gunfire from armed elements believed to be members of the Lakurawa group, who attempted to exploit the terrain to launch a surprise attack.

The escorting troops responded swiftly with superior firepower, foiling what was described as a potentially deadly ambush and forcing the attackers to retreat. No casualties were recorded among the soldiers or the convoy.

Following the engagement, the troops conducted a thorough sweep of the area, recovering a cache of weapons and other items believed to belong to the fleeing terrorists. Items recovered included one OJC gun, one PKT machine gun, two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, a bandolier of PKT ammunition, 12.7mm rounds, a camel bag containing ₦840,000, two mobile phones, and five motorcycles.

Confirming the incident, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, said the attack occurred during the GOC’s operational movement to assess deployments and boost troop morale. He noted that the swift and decisive response of the soldiers secured the convoy and disrupted the terrorists’ plans.

Military authorities said troops remain deployed and vigilant in the Mayama Hill axis and surrounding forest routes, maintaining dominance to prevent further attacks and track down any fleeing elements.

The operation, according to the Army, underscores its commitment to protecting civilians, securing major routes, and eliminating terrorist threats across the North-West region amid sustained security operations.

Osun Police Launch Investigation into Alleged Student Shooting in Osogbo

The Osun State Police Command has commenced a thorough investigation into an alleged shooting and reckless pursuit involving a student and his family in Osogbo, the state capital. The probe follows public uproar after a viral video surfaced, coupled with a press statement from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D.

In an official statement on Monday, Police Public Relations Officer Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed that the command’s attention was drawn to both the video and NANS’ press release dated February 22, 2026, which described the incident along the road connecting Itaolokan Junction to Oke Ayepe.

“The Osun State Police Command has commenced an immediate review of the incident. Preliminary findings are being gathered, including operational records and eyewitness accounts,” the statement read. Ojelabi added that the investigation is ongoing, and authorities are committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the alleged shooting.

The command revealed that Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan, accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers, visited the victims at the hospital. Ojelabi said the victims are responding to treatment, and the police have taken responsibility for covering their medical bills.

Police emphasized that any unauthorised or reckless discharge of firearms will not be tolerated. “Officers found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary actions in line with police regulations,” Ojelabi said, stressing the command’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.

In addition to urging the public and student stakeholders to remain calm, the police called on anyone with verifiable information, video evidence, or eyewitness accounts to come forward and assist the investigation. “Justice will be sought based on facts and evidence,” the statement affirmed.
