Mourinho lands AS Roma manager job

Italian club AS Roma has named Jose Mourinho, as its new manager on a three-year contract.

The former Tottenham coach has signed until June 2024.

The 58-year-old has made a swift return to management after being sacked by Tottenham just 15 days ago.

A brief Roma statement said, “The club are delighted to announce an agreement has been reached with Jose Mourinho for him to become our new head coach ahead of the 2021-22 season.”

Mourinho, who has won league titles in England, Spain and Italy, will be part of talkSPORT’s coverage of Euro 2020 this summer.

He said, “Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision.

“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.

“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.

“In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”

EUROPA: Osimhen stars in Galatasaray draw, Man Utd win over Bodo/Glimt

Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen starred and scored for Galatasaray in their 1-1 draw away to AZ Alkmaar in an Europa League tie on Thursday night.

Some reports say the goal was an own goal by Peer Koopmeiners.

But Osimhen has now scored three goals in four Europa League appearances for Galatasaray, and nine goals in 11 games in all competitions for Galatasaray.

Sven Mijnans opened scoring in the second minute for AZ Alkmaar before Osimhen help the visitors equalise in the 43rd minute after leaping to nod home a cross from the right.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United secured a back-to-back win as they defeated Bodo/Glimt 3-2.

The Red Devils opened scoring in the very first minute through Alejandro Garnacho but the visitors fought back through Hakon Evjen and Philip Zinckernagel before Rasmus Højlund equalised by halftime.

Højlund then scored the winner five minutes into the second half as United make a winning Old Trafford start under new boss Ruben Amorim.

The result boosts United’s chances of a top-eight finish in the Europa League table and automatic qualification for the last 16 in March.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur played a 2-2 draw with AS Roma.

In other Europa League games, Real Sociedad thrashed Ajax 2-0; Nice lost 4-1 to Rangers; Braga thrashed Hoffenheim 3-0; Quarabag lost 4-1 to Lyon; and Anderlecht and Porto played 2-2.

Super Eagles drop eight spots in latest FIFA ranking

The Super Eagles of Nigeria dropped eight places in the latest men’s ranking released by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).

FIFA published the most recent men’s rankings on its official website on Thursday.

The three-time African champions, who were previously placed 36th, are currently in 44th place.

The Super Eagles have also slipped from fourth to fifth place in Africa.

The West Africans drew one and lost one of their two matches in November.

Morocco remained Africa’s top-ranked country, with Senegal, Algeria, and Egypt coming in second, third, and fourth.

Barcelona’s wonder-kid Yamal beats 24 others to win Best Young Player Award

Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal has clinched the Golden Boy Award as the Best Young Player for 2024 after seeing off competition from 24 other nominees to claim the highly coveted trophy.

The Golden Boy Award is an annual honour presented by the Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport. A panel of selected journalists from some of Europe’s top newspapers served as jurors to determine the eventual winner.

Yamal emerged victorious from a competitive field of 24 nominees, including Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, Paris Saint-Germain’s Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Real Madrid’s Endrick.

Other finalists included standout young talents such as Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Rico Lewis (Manchester City), and Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich).

The 17-year-old’s meteoric rise since breaking into Barcelona’s first team during the 2023/24 season has caused waves in the footballing world, with his dazzling performances propelling him above his peers.

Since making his debut among the elite, the Kopa Trophy winner has never looked back as he continues to shatter records along the way.

During the 2023/24 season, he became the youngest player to score in La Liga history. In July this year, he made history by becoming the youngest player to both score and win the European Championship.

Speaking after his emergence as Barcelona’s fourth Golden Boy winner, Yamal said: “For me, it’s a pride to win the Golden Boy. I’m very happy, and it’s a dream.”

“I don’t want to forget my teammates, my coaches, the staff of both Barça and the Spanish national team. It’s been an incredible year, and it’s also ending in an incredible way.”

Lionel Messi (2005), Pedri González (2021), and Gavi (2022) are the three previous Barcelona players to have won the award.
