Northern leaders failed North, not Tinubu – Ex-Speaker Dogara
Northern leaders failed North, not Tinubu – Ex-Speaker Dogara
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu or the southern region is to blame for the challenges facing northern Nigeria.
Speaking at a town hall meeting for Christian leaders in northern Nigeria, Dogara emphasized that the North’s underdevelopment stems from decades of mismanagement by its own leaders.
Dogara, addressing the event themed “Church and Society: Tax Reforms and Matters Arising,” lamented the North’s lack of progress despite holding power in Nigeria for over 40 years. He criticized past northern leaders for squandering opportunities to develop the region.

“We are all northerners, and it should be made clear that President Tinubu or the South is not our problem. They have not come to cheat the North. That is out of the question. Some are claiming that Yoruba people are getting appointments, but let’s reflect. We ruled this country for over 40 years when northerners were in power. What did we achieve? The North remains the same, impoverished by our own leaders,” Dogara said.
Highlighting the misuse of federal resources, Dogara questioned how state governors in the region have managed allocations and revenues such as Value Added Tax (VAT). “We have had so much, but what did our governors do with the resources? They squandered them instead of investing in meaningful development,” he said.
Dogara also referenced the Ajaokuta Steel Industry, an initiative of the Shagari administration, which was almost completed before being abandoned. “The project was almost finished, yet it was left to rot,” he remarked.
The former Speaker called on northerners to support President Tinubu’s efforts to revitalize the nation, particularly through tax reforms currently awaiting approval by the National Assembly. He urged collaboration to ensure Nigeria’s progress, starting with addressing key economic and governance challenges.

State Police: 25 States Approve Bill as Nigeria Moves Closer to Decentralised Policing
State Police: 25 States Approve Bill as Nigeria Moves Closer to Decentralised Policing
Nigeria’s plan to establish state police has crossed a major constitutional hurdle, with 25 State Houses of Assembly reportedly approving the proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution, paving the way for the next stage of the legislative process.
The development marks a significant step towards restructuring the country’s policing system to accommodate both a Federal Police Service and State Police Services.
Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, announced on Friday, October 23, that the required constitutional threshold had been met.
The working group had initially confirmed approval by 24 state assemblies, the minimum two-thirds of the 36 states required under Section 9 of the Constitution. Subsequent reports on Saturday indicated that the number had risen to 25.
The states reported to have approved the amendment are Adamawa, Delta, Edo, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Taraba, Zamfara, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Ekiti, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Abia, Yobe, Kaduna and Gombe.
The constitutional amendment has already passed through the Senate and the House of Representatives before being transmitted to the state legislatures for consideration.
With the required number of state assemblies backing the proposal, the amendment can proceed through the remaining constitutional steps, including its return to the National Assembly for transmission to President Tinubu for assent.
However, meeting the approval threshold does not mean state police have begun operating. Further legislative action and the development of an implementation framework are still required before the proposed system can become operational.
Gbajabiamila said the approval provides constitutional backing for the framework being developed under the draft National Policing Bill 2026. He commended the state assemblies for supporting the proposed reform and acknowledged the National Assembly’s role in passing the amendment.

The Presidential Working Group had earlier completed drafting the proposed National Policing Bill alongside 29 consequential amendment bills and submitted the documents to the Federal Ministry of Justice on October 19 for legislative drafting review and validation.
The ministry is expected to return the reviewed documents by October 30. The working group will then consider the validated drafts before presenting them to the President.
The proposed legislation is designed to establish the legal and administrative framework for a dual policing structure, defining the responsibilities of federal and state police services, as well as arrangements for their operations, funding, supervision and accountability.
Supporters of state police in Nigeria argue that decentralising law enforcement could improve local intelligence gathering, strengthen community policing and enable officers to respond more quickly to threats such as kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and communal violence.
They also contend that officers familiar with local communities may be better positioned to identify security risks and work with residents to prevent crime.
However, the proposal has generated concerns about the possibility of political interference, particularly the risk of governors using state police against political opponents or critics. Questions have also been raised about funding, human rights protections, recruitment standards and mechanisms for investigating misconduct.
The effectiveness of the proposed system will therefore depend not only on its legal establishment but also on clear safeguards to ensure professionalism, independence, accountability and respect for citizens’ rights.
Although the constitutional amendment has crossed the required threshold, the next stages of legislation and implementation will determine when and how states can establish their own police services alongside the federal force.

Police Arrest Suspect Eight Months After Retired Teacher’s Killing in Ogun
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspect over the alleged killing of a 61-year-old retired teacher, Mrs Adedotun Adeteju Oluwaseun, whose body was discovered at her residence in Abeokuta about eight months ago.
The suspect, identified as Alhaji Saburi Lateef Ayinde, popularly known as Oki-Ocean, was arrested on October 19, 2026, following investigations by detectives attached to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The police disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday, October 23, through the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
According to the police, the deceased’s body was discovered in the toilet of her residence at Agbaakin Emere, Bode-Olude, Abeokuta, on February 28, 2026, a day after she reportedly returned from a retirement celebration organised by her colleagues.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the retired teacher was allegedly strangled and attacked with a machete during an altercation with the suspect.
The police said the case was subsequently transferred to the Homicide Section of the SCID for further investigation, leading to Ayinde’s arrest several months after the incident.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the killing and linked the incident to financial dealings with the deceased.
According to the police statement, Ayinde claimed that he had entrusted ₦3.45 million to the retired teacher for safekeeping, with an understanding that she would lend him ₦1.5 million to purchase another vehicle.
However, the police said detectives were still working to corroborate the suspect’s account and establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing. The alleged financial disagreement has not been independently established as the motive for the incident.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended the investigating officers for their persistence and professionalism, which he said had led to a breakthrough in the case.
Ojajuni reiterated the command’s commitment to investigating serious crimes thoroughly, ensuring accountability and bringing suspects before the courts in accordance with the law.
The police said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The command also urged residents to resolve disputes through lawful means and promptly report criminal activities to the appropriate authorities.
The arrest comes amid renewed calls for thorough investigations into violent crimes and timely justice for victims and their families.

MURIC petitions Oyo police over 2019 murder of Muslim cleric in Fiditi
MURIC petitions Oyo police over 2019 murder of Muslim cleric in Fiditi
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, has petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged murder of Pa Biliaminu Taiwo in Fiditi, Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State, in November 2019.
The organisation also called for appropriate legal action against Ojo Akinlabi, following his reported arrest in connection with the killing.
In a press release dated October 23, 2026, MURIC said the petition was submitted to the Commissioner of Police on October 22 and acknowledged by the commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan.
According to the organisation, Pa Taiwo was allegedly hacked to death inside a mosque in Fiditi in November 2019.

MURIC urged the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the case and ensure that anyone found culpable was prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The group also called on the authorities to ensure that the case was handled in a manner that would prevent justice from being frustrated.
“Murder is not a bailable offence,” the organisation said, urging the police to ensure that the suspect was brought before a court of competent jurisdiction and that any decision concerning his custody or release complied with the law.
MURIC further alleged that Akinlabi had a history of violent attacks, including incidents involving the use of knives allegedly coated with poison. However, the organisation did not provide supporting details of the alleged incidents in the statement.
The group described the allegations as a matter of concern and called for appropriate action by the relevant authorities.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of human rights and the rule of law, MURIC said allegations of criminal conduct should receive the attention of law enforcement agencies and be subjected to due process.
The statement was signed by Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, Secretary of MURIC in Oyo State.
The organisation concluded its appeal with the declaration: “Justice delayed must not become justice denied.”
As of the time of the statement, MURIC had not provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the reported arrest or the current status of the police investigation. The allegations against Akinlabi have not been independently verified, and any determination of criminal responsibility remains a matter for the courts.
