Peter Obi visits Dele Farotimi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has lauded lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi for his courage and commitment to the pursuit of a “better Nigeria.”

The former Governor of Anambra State shared his thoughts in a series of tweets on Friday after visiting Farotimi, who recently returned from a correctional facility in Ekiti State.

Farotimi had been detained on December 3 by the Ekiti State Police Command over allegations of defamation and cyberbullying. These charges stemmed from claims by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and legal luminary Aare Afe Babalola, who accused Farotimi of defaming him in a 116-page book titled Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.

Reflecting on their meeting, Obi wrote, “Since his return from the correctional centre in Ekiti, I have not had the opportunity to meet with him. I was pleased to find him in good spirits and deeply encouraged by his unwavering dedication to the struggle for a better Nigeria.”

He continued, “Dele Farotimi exemplifies courage in the face of adversity, consistently taking bold stands for good governance in our nation. I wish him a fruitful and productive year as we continue to work together toward the development of our country.”

Farotimi’s unwavering activism has earned him recognition as a strong voice in the fight for good governance and justice in Nigeria.

How Six Members of a Family Were Murdered in Oyo

Six members of a family, including four children, were allegedly killed during an attack on their home at Oloba Village in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State, with police subsequently arresting three suspects over the gruesome incident.

The victims were identified as Ifeanyi Chukwu, his wife and their four children. The attack reportedly occurred on September 22, 2026, at about 7pm.

According to the Oyo State Police Command, the suspects — Hammed Akinbami, Akinbami Ojo and Padonu Edward — allegedly invaded the family’s residence armed with a locally made Dane gun, two cutlasses and a wooden club.

Police alleged that the attackers also robbed the family of ₦200,000, a Boxer motorcycle, a Doma machine fitted with a chainsaw and a spraying machine before carrying out the killings.

The command said Hammed allegedly shot the father, while Ojo and Edward allegedly attacked the woman with a club.

Two of the children were allegedly tied by their hands and legs and thrown into a nearby river. Police said the other members of the family were also killed and their bodies disposed of in the river.

The case came to the attention of the police after intelligence was received on October 2, leading detectives to launch an investigation and trace the suspects.

Police said the suspects were subsequently arrested and that investigations led officers to the scene, where they recovered several exhibits allegedly connected to the crime.

Among the items recovered were the family’s Boxer motorcycle, a locally made gun, two cutlasses and the wooden club allegedly used during the attack.

The police said the suspects confessed during interrogation to their alleged involvement in the crime, although accounts given by the suspects reportedly differed over what led to the attack.

Hammed allegedly told investigators that the incident was connected to a dispute involving a damaged mobile phone, claiming that the disagreement had remained unresolved despite intervention by community elders.

Another suspect, Padonu, reportedly claimed that Hammed told them they were going to the family’s home to collect money. He admitted hitting the woman but disputed some aspects of Hammed’s account.

Ojo also reportedly claimed that he initially believed they were going to recover money allegedly owed to Hammed. He said he later became aware of the alleged plan to kill members of the family and claimed he was threatened if he refused to participate.

The remains of the woman have been recovered, according to the police, while efforts are continuing to recover the remains of the other victims from the river for autopsy and eventual burial.

The suspects and case file are expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, for further investigation and prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has ordered a thorough investigation and directed that anyone found culpable be brought to justice.

The suspects have not been convicted of the alleged offences. They remain presumed innocent unless found guilty by a competent court.

Flood Submerges Enugu Road, Strands School Children, Passengers

Floodwaters have submerged parts of a major road linking Enugu and Anambra, leaving school children, passengers and other commuters stranded after heavy rainfall.

The flooding affected the Awka-Nibo-Nise-Enugu-Ukwu Ring Road, where a school shuttle bus carrying children became trapped by rising water.

Police operatives, working with community residents, rescued seven school children and two adults from the flooded area, while one child was initially reported missing.

The missing pupil, identified as Success Ezenwafor, a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, was later found dead after being swept away by the floodwaters.

READ ALSO:

The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall that caused widespread flooding in parts of Anambra State, disrupting transportation and putting residents and motorists at risk.

The Old Enugu-Onitsha Road at Ogidi was also rendered impassable by floodwaters, forcing motorists and other road users to seek alternative routes.

Residents and commuters said the recurring flooding has become a major challenge during the rainy season, with motorists facing prolonged journeys and increased transportation costs whenever the affected routes become inaccessible.

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has urged parents, motorists and other residents to exercise extreme caution during heavy rainfall and allow floodwaters to recede before travelling through affected areas.

NEMA’s Enugu Zonal Office also warned residents in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant as water levels continued to rise in parts of the region.

The agency advised parents against sending children through flooded routes and urged residents to relocate to safer areas when necessary.

The latest flooding has renewed calls for lasting measures to address drainage and flooding problems along major roads connecting communities in Anambra and Enugu.

EFCC Re-Arraigns Two Over Alleged £110,000 Money Laundering, ₦500m Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned two men, Ali Bala, also known as Barrister Ahmed, and Yusuf Umar Anka, over alleged financial crimes involving £110,000 and ₦500 million in Lagos.

The defendants were brought before Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe of the Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja on Wednesday.

They are facing a 10-count charge bordering on money laundering, stealing and retention of stolen property. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The EFCC alleged that Bala and Anka, sometime in 2025 in Lagos, conducted financial transactions involving proceeds of unlawful activities in an attempt to disguise the source of £110,000 allegedly stolen.

The commission also alleged that the defendants were involved in financial transactions involving ₦500 million, which it described as proceeds of unlawful activities.

The alleged money laundering offence was said to contravene Section 7(1)(b)(i) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

READ ALSO:

Another allegation cited in reports from the proceedings was that Bala and Anka converted ₦500 million belonging to Salihu Muhammed to their personal use between July and August 2025. The alleged offence was said to contravene Sections 280(1)(a) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Following their pleas, EFCC prosecution counsel, Bilikisu Buhari, urged the court to fix a date for trial and remand the defendants in a correctional facility.

Defence lawyers, however, indicated that their clients were interested in plea bargaining while their bail applications were pending.

Justice Abike-Fadipe subsequently adjourned the matter until December 16, 2026, for further proceedings and hearing of the bail applications.

The judge also ordered that the defendants remain in custody pending the next proceedings.

The allegations against Bala and Anka have not been proven in court. Both defendants pleaded not guilty and remain presumed innocent unless convicted by a competent court.
