Advocacy group rejects U.S military intervention, urges governance reforms to tackle insecurity

A civil advocacy group, Rescue Movement for New Nigeria (RMNN), has firmly opposed any suggestion of a United States-led military intervention in Nigeria, asserting that foreign invasion is not a viable solution to the country’s deepening security crisis.

In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Rotimi Daniels, the group condemned the persistent wave of terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings across the country, blaming successive administrations for failing to protect citizens and uphold accountability.

“No sane man will support any military invasion in Nigeria. We demand accountability from the Nigerian Government,” Daniels said. “The government has successively failed the citizens over time.”

The RMNN criticised both the former administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and the current government led by President Bola Tinubu, alleging that neither has demonstrated the capacity or sincerity to address the escalating violence.

According to the group, many communities under siege have been forced to negotiate with armed groups for survival, paying levies to terrorists while the government focuses more on political realignments than citizen safety.

“Residents of communities under attack have surrendered their fate into the hands of gun-brandishing terrorists, paying taxes and dues to stay alive. Their government has failed them in all totality,” the statement read.

The group also highlighted the religious undertones of recent attacks, citing the Owo Catholic Church massacre, the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, and killings in Benue and Southern Kaduna as examples of unchecked violence. However, it cautioned against allowing tribal or religious sentiments to derail a unified national response.

While rejecting the idea of foreign military intervention, RMNN emphasized that Nigeria’s path to peace lies in good governance, electoral reform, and a justice system that reflects the will of the people.

“If the United States invasion will bring lasting peace, so be it, but it is still not the best option,” Daniels stated. “What we are advocating and asking for is good governance and accountability in Nigeria.”

The group called for comprehensive electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary to ensure that the process is transparent and truly representative of the people’s will.

“Let the 2027 general elections be a reflection of the people’s wish and not the suppression of the same through election manipulations and outright illegality,” the statement concluded.

The RMNN reaffirmed its commitment to building an inclusive, people-oriented democracy rooted in justice, patriotism, and national unity.
