AFCON 2025 Title in Limbo as CAS Freezes Decision on Senegal, Morocco Dispute

AFCON 2025 Title in Limbo as CAS Freezes Decision on Senegal, Morocco Dispute

African football has been plunged into uncertainty following a dramatic intervention by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has provisionally suspended a controversial ruling that stripped Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and awarded it to Morocco.

In an interim decision issued this week, CAS upheld an appeal filed by the Senegalese football authorities against a verdict delivered by the Confederation of African Football Appeals Board. The tribunal ordered an immediate “freeze” on the implementation of that ruling, effectively halting any formal recognition of Morocco as champions.

The dispute stems from a contentious decision by the Appeals Board of the Confederation of African Football, which had overturned Senegal’s triumph at the 2025 AFCON and reassigned the title to Morocco under circumstances that have not been fully disclosed publicly.

CAS stated that its provisional order is intended to preserve the status quo and prevent “irreparable harm” to all parties involved while a full hearing is conducted. As a result, the 2025 AFCON title now remains undecided, pending a final ruling by the Switzerland-based tribunal.

The development has sparked widespread debate across the continent, with fans, analysts, and football stakeholders expressing concern over the credibility of the competition and its governing processes.

Both Senegal and Morocco are expected to present detailed arguments and evidence when the case proceeds to a full hearing. Until then, African football’s most prestigious tournament remains overshadowed by legal uncertainty.
