Agbekoya, Amotekun strengthen security in Oyo amid rising kidnapping in Kwara, Kogi

In response to the rising wave of kidnapping and banditry in Kwara and Kogi states, the Agbekoya Farmers Association has deployed security personnel to villages and communities in Oyo State considered high-risk, aiming to assist the police and other government security agencies.

The move, announced in a statement by the association’s State Governor, Olatunji Bandele, and National Public Relations Officer, Olatunde Ashagidigbi, comes as the group expressed concern over the recent insecurity across Nigeria, including incidents in Kebbi and Borno states.

“To prevent tragedies in Oyo State, we mobilised our security men to flashpoint areas to assist the police,” the statement read. “Agbekoya condemns the breakdown of security architecture in Nigeria, which has left villages, communities, and schools vulnerable to kidnappings and attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen and bandits. We are committed to protecting farmers, their farmlands, and the people, in partnership with government security agencies.”

The association also praised the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Femi Haruna, for his support in ensuring criminals have no safe haven in the state.

Meanwhile, South West Amotekun Commander, Mr Adetunji Adeleye, assured residents that Amotekun security operatives are committed to strengthening security across the region, particularly in rural and forested areas. He emphasized that the security strategy relies heavily on intelligence-driven operations and proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.

Adeleye added, “The security outfits across the region are on top of the situation. We are ready for any eventuality and are working closely with the South West Governors’ Forum to ensure the safety of the region and its forests.”

Both Agbekoya and Amotekun’s initiatives signal a proactive approach to addressing insecurity and protecting communities in Oyo State and the broader South West region.
