Agunbiade applauds Alaafin for appointing Barrister Bilaah as Grand Imam of Oyo

IBADAN, November 12, 2025 — Prominent Islamic scholar and community leader, Ambassador Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, has congratulated Barrister Bilal Akinola Husayn Akeugberu, popularly known as Barrister Bilaah, on his appointment as the new Grand Imam of Oyo, describing the choice as “well-deserved and divinely inspired.”

In a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday, Agunbiade hailed the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abdul Hakeem Owoade Elewuetu I, for what he called a “visionary and fair decision” that underscores the monarch’s commitment to justice, scholarship, and unity within the Muslim community.

Agunbiade noted that he had earlier made a public appeal to the monarch in an article published on The Mirror Online on August 8, 2025, urging him to prioritize “moral uprightness, scholarship, and unity” in choosing Oyo’s next chief imam.

“Alhamdulillah! I heartily congratulate Sheikh Al Imam Barrister Bilaah Oseni Akinola on this most deserved selection as the Grand Imam of Oyo,” Agunbiade said.
“This appointment is a recognition of his piety, academic distinction, and service to the Muslim Ummah. May Allah bless his leadership and guide him in the service of Islam and humanity.”

He also praised the Alaafin for “listening to the voice of the people” and for continually promoting religious harmony and intellectual leadership in the state.

According to him, “The Alaafin’s choice of Barrister Bilaah reflects foresight and justice. It is a decision that will strengthen unity among Muslims in Oyo and inspire the younger generation.”

Agunbiade, a Taalib Jami’ei at the Islamic Propagation Rabwa in Saudi Arabia, called on Islamic organizations, scholars, and residents of Oyo to rally around the new Grand Imam and work collectively for peace and community development.

Barrister Bilaah’s emergence as Grand Imam has been widely celebrated across the Oyo Muslim community, with many describing him as a scholar of integrity and deep spiritual conviction.
