Aisha Yesufu Defects to ADC as Party Pushes for Accountable Governance

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to rally behind the party in its mission to promote credible governance, grassroots leadership, and accountability across the country.

The call was made on Monday in Abuja by the party’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chairman, Yusuf Tijani, during a formal reception for rights activist Comrade Aisha Yesufu, who recently defected to the ADC.

Tijani described Yesufu’s entry as a major boost for the party, highlighting ADC’s commitment to modest, responsible governance and leadership that prioritizes the needs of the people.

“It’s an African institute, though it’s a political party, African Democratic Congress. We build leadership. In ADC, we build leadership that will take care of the grassroots,” Tijani said.

He lamented the nation’s persistent leadership challenges since the return to democracy in 1999, attributing them to selfishness and lack of contentment among public officeholders.

“A leader that does not take care of his people is not a leader… This is what ADC stands for. This is what we want to bring, to a new Nigeria that is possible,” Tijani added.

Yesufu, in her remarks, criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming the party has lost its mandate and is struggling to maintain relevance.

“They are trying to give an illusion of power, which they no longer have… For us in ADC, what you see is a gathering of people who are not scared, while those in power are already thinking of packing and leaving,” she said.

Other party officials, including Hon. Afahibada Danjuma and FCT Youth Leader Ismail Suleiman, expressed optimism about ADC’s performance in the upcoming FCT Area Council elections on February 21, 2026, and predicted a change in national leadership in 2027.

ADC has been actively attracting prominent figures nationwide, including a former Senate President, signaling a growing influence and visibility ahead of the next election cycle.
