Akpabio Raises Hope for Ibadan State Creation During Visit to Olubadan

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has raised fresh hopes for the creation of Ibadan State, assuring that the long-standing demand could receive favourable consideration at the National Assembly.

Akpabio gave the assurance on Sunday during a courtesy visit to the Bodija residence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, shortly after the monarch’s installation.

The Senate President, who was accompanied by several senators, said the agitation for Ibadan State creation would be examined on the floor of the Senate.

“Ibadan is an incoming state, the only state in Nigeria seeking creation based on popular demand,” Akpabio said.

He described Oba Ladoja’s installation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland as a blessing not only to Ibadan but to the South-West region.

According to Akpabio, the people of Ibadan made the right choice in Ladoja, citing his credentials as a former senator, former governor of Oyo State, entrepreneur and administrator.

He added that the monarch’s background as a nationalist would bring innovation and renewed vitality to the traditional institution in the South-West.

“His reign will witness a lot of progress, and the people of Ibadan will benefit greatly during his reign,” Akpabio said.

In his response, the Olubadan of Ibadanland thanked the Senate President and his delegation for the visit and renewed his call for the creation of Ibadan State.

“My subjects have given me the mandate to represent their interests on all issues, including the creation of Ibadan State,” Oba Ladoja said.

The monarch disclosed that he had earlier presented the request to President Bola Tinubu during his installation ceremony and appealed to Akpabio to leverage his office to ensure its actualisation.

He also called for constitutional recognition of traditional institutions, warning that such protection was necessary to prevent the arbitrary removal of traditional rulers by state governors.
