Alleged Christians killings: COAS assures Nigerians of safer country after meeting Tinubu
Amid escalating security challenges, particularly in northern Nigeria, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has assured citizens that the Nigerian Army is taking concrete steps to strengthen security across the country.
Shaibu gave the assurance on Tuesday after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he briefed the President on recent military operations and the general security situation.
“I just came to brief him on the outcome of my visit to the northeast region and to look at other security situations across the country, which were satisfactory within this period,” the army chief said.
When asked what Nigerians should expect following his tour of the Northeast, Shaibu responded confidently, saying:
“Improved security across the country.”
The meeting came on the heels of U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial declaration of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” and his threat to take military action over alleged attacks on Christians.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has said diplomatic efforts are ongoing to address the misunderstanding with Washington.

Speaking on Sky News’ “The World With Yalda Hakim” programme on Monday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed that communication channels had been opened between both countries.
“Channels of communication have been opened. I can confirm that. We are talking to them, and I believe they are now appreciating the situation better,” Idris stated.
The minister dismissed allegations of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, insisting that the U.S. had been “misled to mischaracterise” the nature of the killings. He further alleged that intelligence reports uncovered links between a proscribed separatist group in Nigeria and U.S.-based lobby organisations promoting false narratives about the country.
“We have observed a direct connection between lobbyists in the United States and a proscribed terrorist group in Nigeria. These groups are actively engaging influential people in the U.S. to advance misleading narratives,” he said.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to maintaining diplomatic dialogue with Washington while working to restore peace and stability across Nigeria.
