Alleged Medical Negligence: Kano Suspends Three Hospital Staff Over Patient’s Death

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three health officers over the alleged medical negligence that led to the death of a housewife, Aishatu Umar, at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, Kano.

The suspension, which takes immediate effect, was confirmed on Wednesday by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, following a preliminary investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary of the board, Mansur Mudi Nagoda.

In a statement, Suleiman said the board had established that the incident involving the late Aishatu Umar occurred at the urology centre and involved personnel under its supervision.

“In line with our commitment to accountability, professionalism, and patient safety, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three personnel directly involved in the case from all clinical activities with immediate effect,” the statement read.

She added that the matter has been formally referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for a more detailed investigation and appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with existing laws, professional guidelines, and ethical standards.

The Board expressed its deep condolences to the family of the deceased and sympathised with them over the tragic loss, assuring the public that negligence in any form will not be tolerated across state-owned health facilities.

It further reaffirmed its resolve to strengthen internal monitoring, enforce professional standards, and take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence of such incidents in the future.

The late Umar was reported to have died following complications from a surgical procedure carried out at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre. A family member, Mohammed, who shared details of the incident on Facebook, alleged that she suffered persistent abdominal pain for months after the surgery.

According to him, Aishatu Umar, who was married and had five children, died around 1am on Tuesday after enduring severe abdominal pain since undergoing surgery in September 2025.

Following public outcry over the incident, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board on Tuesday ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
