Amaechi hints at contesting 2027 Presidential election, says he has capacity to rule Nigeria

Amaechi hints at contesting 2027 Presidential election, says he has capacity to rule Nigeria

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has hinted at contesting for the presidency in 2027 under the newly adopted coalition platform, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that he has the “capacity to rule Nigeria” and would have done better than President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking during a Thursday night interview on Channels Television, Amaechi said he believes he possesses the competence and leadership experience required to govern Nigeria.

He added that his capacity to lead the nation surpasses that of the current administration under President Bola Tinubu. According to him, hunger, inflation, and rampant insecurity would not have reached their present levels if he were president.

Amaechi further disclosed that the newly launched opposition coalition has agreed that all prospective aspirants must prioritise building the ADC as a formidable national platform before any declarations of ambition can be made.

When asked whether he would be willing to serve a single term in office in line with the unwritten North-South power rotation agreement, the former minister stated that he is open to serving just one term and committed to honouring such an arrangement.

Earlier on Wednesday, Amaechi announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that his formal exit came after a prolonged period of disengagement from party activities.

He made the revelation at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja during the unveiling of the interim leadership of the ADC, now serving as the adopted platform of the 2027 opposition coalition.

The coalition, which includes notable figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark, aims to unseat the ruling APC in the next presidential election.

David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola have been named interim National Chairman and Secretary of the ADC, respectively.
