About three days after the death of its former vice chancellor, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has lost a retired professor of science education, Duro Ajeyalemi, to COVID-19.
Ajeyalemi, an immediate past registrar of the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), reportedly died on Wednesday at an isolation centre in Lagos.
He retired from UNILAG in 2020 after he clocked 70 years old.
His demise is coming after the death of Oye Ibidapo-Obe, a former VC of UNILAG.
Ibidapo-Obe, a professor of systems engineering, died of COVID-19 complications in an undisclosed hospital.
The university’s deputy vice-chancellor in charge of development services, Folasade Ogunsola, who confirmed the development said the institution’s management was “again shocked to receive the news of the death of another great scholar.”
“It is true Professor Ajeyalemi is dead. We are still in shock. Nigerians should know that COVID-19 is real and they should please use masks appropriately,” Ogunsola was quoted as saying by TVC.
The TV station also said the don died at the isolation centre at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, in Lagos.
So far, Nigeria has recorded a total of 92,705 COVID-19 cases with 1,319 deaths.
