APC Chairman Nentawe Meets Shekarau in Kano, Pushes for Defection

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, on Wednesday paid a strategic visit to former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, at his residence in Kano, urging him to join the ruling party as part of ongoing political realignments.

Speaking during the visit, Nentawe said the APC needs a political heavyweight like Shekarau to consolidate its gains in Kano State and strengthen its influence nationally. He described the former governor as a respected statesman whose experience and grassroots appeal would significantly boost the party’s structure, especially in the North-West region.

“The APC recognises the value and experience of Shekarau. His presence in the party will further enhance our strength both in Kano and across the country,” the chairman said, noting that the visit formed part of broader efforts to reconcile aggrieved stakeholders, expand party membership, and stabilise the political landscape ahead of future elections.

The APC boss further disclosed that the meeting was a formal invitation to Shekarau to join the party, adding that the ruling party remains open to engaging influential leaders across party lines in the interest of national development and unity. Sources within the party also indicated that similar outreach efforts are ongoing in other states as the APC intensifies moves to attract opposition figures.

In his response, Shekarau welcomed the APC delegation and acknowledged the significance of the visit. However, he said his next political move would be determined through consultations with a Shura (advisory) committee, which is currently reviewing his political options.

The former governor openly expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the People’s Democratic Party, citing persistent internal crises and divisions within the party.

“We can no longer continue staying in the PDP because of the crises,” Shekarau stated, suggesting that his continued membership in the opposition party is increasingly untenable.

He, however, stopped short of confirming any immediate defection, emphasising that a final decision would be taken only after consultations with key stakeholders and loyalists. Political observers say his eventual move could reshape the political balance in Kano State, where he remains a highly influential figure with a loyal support base.

The APC chairman was accompanied on the visit by members of the party’s National Working Committee, alongside the Kano State APC chairman and other party executives, underscoring the importance attached to the engagement.

Analysts believe the meeting highlights intensifying political realignments ahead of future elections, with the ruling party seeking to consolidate power by bringing experienced politicians like Shekarau into its fold.
