APC clears 16 of 18 LGAs in Ondo elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has clinched 16 out of 18 chairmanship seats in the just-concluded local government elections in Ondo State.

Joseph Aeemo, Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Akure on Sunday.

Aeemo noted that while voting in Ondo West LGA was rescheduled, results from Owo LGA are still pending.

Twelve political parties participated in the election held on Saturday, including the Action Alliance, the Labour Party, and the Social Democratic Party.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew, citing a lack of confidence in ODIEC’s ability to conduct a fair election.

Before the Saturday poll, the last council election in the state was conducted on August 23, 2020, with the tenure of the elected council officials elapsing on August 22, 2023.

Since then, the administration of the 18 council areas of the state has been managed by civil servants, specifically the Heads of Local Government Administrations.

However, after several postponements, the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission finally fixed January 18, 2025, for the conduct of the election.
