APC Opens Dialogue With Wike to End Fubara Crisis in Rivers
Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed it is actively engaging the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in ongoing efforts to resolve the lingering political crisis involving Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The disclosure was made by APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, who stressed that Wike remains a critical political stakeholder despite not being a registered member of the party. According to Basiru, the former Rivers governor’s strong backing of President Bola Tinubu and his deep political influence in the state make his involvement essential to reconciliation efforts.
Basiru explained that much of the party’s engagement is happening quietly, noting that sensitive political negotiations are rarely conducted in the public eye. His remarks come amid growing concerns over the party leadership’s perceived silence while Governor Fubara faces impeachment threats and ongoing legal battles.

The Rivers political turmoil stems from a prolonged power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, largely centred on control of the state’s political structure and the leadership of the House of Assembly. The conflict has triggered legal disputes, governance tensions, and heightened political uncertainty in the oil-rich state.
Recent developments indicate that President Tinubu has been briefed on reports related to the crisis, underscoring its national political significance and the urgency of finding a lasting solution.
Basiru expressed confidence that the dispute would ultimately be resolved peacefully, assuring that any settlement would produce “no victor and no vanquished.” Party insiders believe stabilising Rivers State is strategically important to the administration’s broader political calculations and future electoral positioning.
Governor Fubara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party reshaped the state’s political landscape, while stalled impeachment proceedings — currently tied up in court — continue to intensify the high-stakes rivalry.
The APC’s latest outreach to Wike signals a possible softening of positions after earlier disagreements, raising expectations that behind-the-scenes negotiations could pave the way for a durable political settlement and restore stability in Rivers State.
