APC vows to sanction members who hold parallel congresses

Ahead of its congresses scheduled for Saturday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned its members not to participate in any activity that will cast the party in a bad light.

In a notice addressed to members seen by TheCable on Friday, John Akpanudoedehe, national secretary of the APC caretaker committee, said the party will invoke the necessary disciplinary measures on those who hold parallel congresses.

 

Akpanudoedehe also reminded party members of the national executive committee (NEC) resolution which directed members not to take the party to court unless it has exhausted “the internal mechanism for conflict resolution, as enshrined in the party’s constitution”.

 

“All activities that may be carried out by persons to put the party and its officers in bad light before, during and after the congresses should be jettisoned,” he said.

“All activities or processes leading up to the congresses and thereafter which do not have the approval of the CECPC are exercises in futility. This is to say that: any purported parallel congress, parallel party organ and or parallel party office, is to say the least a nullity.

 

“These divisive activities will not be tolerated.

 

“For the avoidance of doubt, the party shall deploy the full weight of the law as stipulated in section 21 (D) of our party’s Constitution on anyone who perpetrates such unlawful Act (s) and also on their sponsors.

“All persons who are affected by Article 31 of our constitution should apply for waivers as stipulated under sub. Section 3 of the said article 31, this is also clearly spelt out in the ‘Special provisions’ of our guidelines.”

 

Party members like Festus Keyamo, minister of state for labour and employment, had called for the suspension of the congresses following the supreme court verdict on the Ondo gubernatorial poll.

 

Keyamo had asked the party to sack Buni and anyone holding any executive position on the committee and immediately suspend the planned congresses.

 

He said this is to avoid legal battles since the competence of Buni to hold the position as chairman has been questioned by the supreme court.

Umahi replies Obi over Lagos-Calabar coastal project criticism

The Minister of Works, David Umahi has said that Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra, is inciting the southeast to rebel against the federal government over the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project.

Umahi disclosed this on Wednesday at a road project stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos.

The Lagos-Calabar coastal road, which will pass through eight other states including the beach resorts along Lagos’ beachfront, has had its construction processs commenced by the federal government.

The project has generated controversy and concerns about funding and the businesses that would be affected during construction.

On Tuesday, Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, criticised the federal government over the project, describing it as a misplaced priority.

The former Anambra governor said the “insensitive” demolition of structures for the project was “heart-wrenching”.

Responding to Obi’s comment, Umahi said Obi supported the demolition of structures for road infrastructure while he was the governor of Anambra.

The minister condemned Obi for criticising the federal government over the project, adding that affected property owners are already being compensated.

“When you condemn people you bring judgment upon yourself and that is what he has done,” Umahi said.

“I think he is inciting some of the south-east people that are not well informed.

“He is inciting and getting them into trouble and he does not go to fight for them.

“Wisdom is a defence. It gives light to those that practice it. I want our people to have wisdom because I’m involved.”

Umahi added that the federal government did not destroy the facilities of Landmark Beach, noting that only shanties on the right of way were removed.

He said the owners of Landmark Beach were not unfairly treated in the construction of the project.

The minister accused Paul Onwuanibe, chief executive officer (CEO) of Landmark Africa Group, of politicising the issues arising from the project.

Coastal highway: FG begins N2.75bn compensation payments to affected building owners

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced that the federal government plans to pay N2.75 billion as compensation to property owners affected by the demolition required for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway today, Wednesday, May 1.

Umahi said that the highway is projected to stretch from channel 0 to channel 3.

He announced this during a stakeholders meeting held in Lagos today.

According to him, more compensation is expected to be paid in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Umahi, has alleged that Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, is inciting people of the southeast, especially those who are not well informed, against the government.

Umahi claimed that Obi would not fight for the people even after getting them into trouble.

The former Ebonyi State Governor alleged that Obi goes around to condemn people, thereby bringing judgment upon himself.

He said: “It brings to some of the comments made by my brother, his Excellency Mr Peter Obi, I am not supposed to comment about it because some people have already done the work. And I know what Arise Television brought courtesy of Channels Television, they were bringing similar scenarios when His Excellency Peter Obi was the governor. He made a statement saying ”Any infrastructure that stands in the way of the road must go. And there would be no compensation paid.” That’s what he said.

“But look at me, by the human face of the renewed hope agenda administration, we are even paying for people who are illegally staying on the coastal line, and don’t have valid infrastructure and valid documents. That is mercy, that’s mercy… You know some people darken counsel without knowledge. You know there’s the devil in the details.

“When you condemn people, you bring judgment upon yourself. And that is what he (Obi) has done. And I think he’s inciting some of the south east people that are not well informed. He is inciting them. And gets them into trouble. And he doesn’t go to fight for them. Wisdom is a defence. And I want our people to have wisdom because I am involved.

“There’s is no inhumanity meted to Landmark, that matters should be buried because I was there. And so we fought everything possible. Even some people donated property to save his two big infrastructures. That’s appreciation. But some people have taken sides along with him to play politics.
