APC wins all 18 chairmanship, 192 councillorship seats in Edo LG election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a clean sweep in the Edo State Local Government Election, winning all 18 chairmanship seats and 192 councillorship positions contested in Saturday’s polls.

The results were officially announced by the Chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, who declared the ruling party victorious in every local government area and ward where elections were conducted.

Announcing the outcome in Benin City, Aifuobhokhan said the electoral process complied with the provisions of the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law, 2022, as amended in 2026, as well as other applicable electoral guidelines.

According to him, accreditation of voters, voting, sorting of ballots, counting, collation and declaration of results were successfully conducted across the state.

“Following the completion of the collation process at the various ward and local government collation centres, the duly appointed ward and local government returning officers announced and declared the results in their respective jurisdictions.

“Based on the official results declared by the returning officers, the commission hereby declares that the APC won the 18 local government chairmanship seats and all the 192 councillorship positions contested in the election.”

The EDSIEC chairman commended the returning officers for discharging their responsibilities professionally, impartially and in accordance with the law. He acknowledged that although a few polling units experienced minor operational challenges, the issues did not materially affect the credibility or overall outcome of the election.

He also praised political parties, candidates, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, community leaders, youth and women groups, election officials and voters for their peaceful conduct before, during and after the exercise.

The election was conducted across 18 local government areas and 192 political wards in Edo State, with security personnel deployed to polling units and collation centres to maintain law and order.

Although voting was generally peaceful in many parts of the state, the exercise was marked by low voter turnout in several communities. Political observers attributed the turnout to voter apathy and the decision of some opposition parties not to participate in the election.

Ahead of the polls, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced its boycott of the election, alleging that the process lacked the conditions for a credible and transparent contest. A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) also withdrew from the election, citing concerns over the conduct of the exercise.

Despite the boycott by some opposition parties, EDSIEC maintained that the election was conducted in accordance with the law and that all participating political parties were given equal opportunities throughout the process.

The APC’s comprehensive victory further strengthens the party’s political control at the grassroots level in Edo State and is expected to consolidate its influence following its success in recent state elections.

Political analysts say the outcome could shape local governance, grassroots development and political alignments ahead of future electoral contests in the state.

The newly elected local government chairmen and councillors are expected to assume office after completing the necessary legal and administrative procedures prescribed under the state’s local government laws.

Meanwhile, attention is expected to shift to possible reactions from opposition parties, election observers and civil society organisations regarding the conduct of the polls and the outcome announced by the electoral commission.
