Army Confirms Boko Haram Suicide Attack on Maiduguri Mosque

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that a Boko Haram suicide bomber was responsible for the deadly explosion that rocked a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

The blast occurred at the Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque, located in the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, during the evening Maghrib prayer, leaving no fewer than five worshippers dead and 35 others injured.

Providing an update on Thursday, the Theatre Command of Operation Hadin Kai said investigations revealed that the explosion was carried out by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist. The confirmation was made by the Command’s spokesman, Lt. Col. Sani Uba.

“Preliminary findings indicate the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians at the scene,” Lt. Col. Uba stated.

He explained that troops, working alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), swiftly secured and cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and ensure public safety.

According to the army spokesman, all injured victims were immediately evacuated to Maiduguri General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Lt. Col. Uba disclosed that 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries, adding that two of the wounded later died at the hospital, while two others remain in critical condition. He noted that the remaining victims are stable and responding to treatment.

Assuring residents of their safety during the festive period, the Theatre Command said security surveillance and patrols have been intensified across Maiduguri and its environs to forestall further attacks.
