Army, police dislodge suspected IPOB/ESN camp in Imo

The Imo State Police Command announced on Wednesday that a joint security task force successfully dislodged a suspected hideout of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), an armed wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in Aku community, Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo State.

In a statement to journalists in Owerri, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Henry Okoye, detailed the operation, which involved the Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other security agencies.

According to the statement: “The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, alongside other service commanders, urged residents to continue providing actionable intelligence to aid ongoing security operations targeting criminal elements in the state. This appeal followed a December 3, 2024, visit to assess the progress of joint security efforts in clearing a notorious hideout in Aku, Okigwe LGA, linked to the criminal group led by the ESN commander, ‘Gentle,’ and his team.”

The visit included high-ranking officials such as Brigadier General U.A. Lawal, Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade in Obinze; the Commander of Naval Base, Oguta; the Director of DSS; the Commissioner for Homeland Security; and the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Security Affairs, Brig. Gen. Joseph Ogbonna (Rtd.).

The statement revealed that the operation, which had been ongoing for several weeks, dismantled a significant base used by the group for launching violent attacks on civilians and security personnel. Key suspects were arrested, and the operation has notably improved security in the state.

Brig. Gen. Ogbonna assured Aku residents of government support for their safety and urged them to return to their community and cooperate with security agencies. Both CP Aboki Danjuma and Brigadier General Lawal emphasized the importance of public collaboration in sustaining the operation’s success and maintaining peace.

The statement concluded: “The visit by key security commanders underscores the seriousness of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and restore peace in Imo State. Their collective presence demonstrates the commitment of authorities to address security challenges decisively.”
