ASUU defies FG plea, embarks on two-week strike
Despite pleas from the federal government to shelve its proposed strike action, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria, effective from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025.
This follows the expiration of a 14-day notice given on September 28, 2025.
ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, who disclosed at a press briefing in Abuja, stated that all branches of ASUU have been directed to withdraw their services.
He cited insufficient progress from the federal government regarding long-standing demands, including university funding, implementation of previous agreements, and staff welfare concerns.
“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on the ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th of September 2025.
“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th of October, 2025.

“The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” he noted.
Recall that the federal government had appealed to the union to exercise patience as negotiations on outstanding issues continue.
The government had explained that it had commenced the final phase of negotiations with the unions, with a technical working group finalising a counteroffer to be presented through the Allied General United Federal Government Tertiary Institutions Negotiations Committee.
However, the union had dismissed the government’s appeal, saying that the intervention came “a little too late”.
ASUU’s major demands include the payment of earned academic allowances, unpaid and withheld salaries, promotion arrears, revitalisation funds, arrears of wage awards, responsibility allowances, and unremitted third-party deductions.
The union also demanded the reinstatement of victimised members in some universities and the immediate signing and implementation of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement.
