ASUU directs varsity lecturers to join nationwide workers strike
The ongoing nationwide strike led by the NLC and TUC has taken a significant turn as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced its participation in the industrial action.
This decision comes in response to the Federal Government’s failure to meet the unions’ minimum wage demand.
In a statement directed to branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators of ASUU, the association’s President, Mr. Emmanuel Osodeke, instructed lecturers nationwide to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress.
Mr. Osodeke’s statement highlighted the NLC’s declaration of an indefinite strike action starting from Monday, 3rd June, 2024. The strike is a direct consequence of the government’s inability to conclude the renegotiation of the minimum wage for Nigerian workers and to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariff.
