Awujale Succession: Abiodun Promises New Ijebuland Monarch Before May 29, 2027

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has assured the people of Ijebuland that a new Awujale of Ijebuland will emerge before May 29, 2027, as efforts continue to fill the vacant traditional stool following the death of the revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

Abiodun gave the assurance on Tuesday at the Ogun East Senatorial District stakeholders’ meeting in Ijebu-Ode, where he discussed traditional institutions, governance, infrastructure and economic development with representatives of various interest groups.

The governor said his administration was committed to ensuring a peaceful, transparent and widely acceptable succession process that would preserve the dignity of the Awujale institution and promote unity across Ijebuland.

He urged residents to remain calm and patient while the necessary procedures for selecting the next monarch were being concluded.

According to Abiodun, the Awujale institution remains central to the cultural heritage, identity and unity of the Ijebu people, making it important for the succession process to be handled carefully and peacefully.

He expressed confidence that the process would be concluded in a manner that would earn the acceptance and support of the people.

The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona at the age of 91. The late monarch reigned for 65 years, making his succession a significant issue for the people of Ijebuland.

The governor also used the stakeholders’ meeting to discuss economic prospects for Ogun East Senatorial District, identifying oil exploration activities around Eba Island and the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area as potential drivers of economic growth.

He said the proposed port, alongside the planned Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, could attract investment, create employment opportunities and expand commercial activities in shipping, logistics, manufacturing and maritime trade.

Abiodun expressed optimism that the projects would strengthen Ogun State’s position as an investment destination and improve economic opportunities for residents, particularly young people.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and investment promotion, while acknowledging the Federal Government’s support for critical projects in the state.

The governor also called for continued cooperation among government institutions, traditional rulers, community leaders and private-sector investors to advance peace and development across Ogun State.
