Bandits kill Vice-Principal, abduct 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi state midnight attack

Bandits have launched a deadly assault on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, in the Danko Wasagu area of Kebbi State, killing the school’s Vice-Principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, and abducting 25 female students in the early hours of Monday.

The attack, which occurred around 5 a.m., threw the community of Maga into panic. Residents say the area has suffered repeated assaults in recent months.

According to an eyewitness, Aliyu Yakubu, the heavily armed attackers entered the school compound without resistance.

“The attack has created panic among residents. We are now in fear and mourning,” he said.

Yakubu confirmed that Vice-Principal Makuku was shot while attempting to shield students from being taken away.

“He was shot as he tried to protect his students. It is a great loss,” he added.

Initial attempts to reach the Kebbi State Police Command were unsuccessful, but the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, later confirmed the incident.

Abubakar revealed that the bandits scaled the school fence, fired shots indiscriminately, and whisked away the students before tactical police units could repel them.

“Our tactical team engaged them in a gunfight, but they had already abducted the students from their hostel,” he stated.

The Kebbi State Government has dispatched Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Tafida, to the attack site on the instruction of Governor Nasir Idris, who is currently out of the state.

Chief Press Secretary Ahmed Idris said:

“The deputy governor is on his way to assess the situation. The governor is not in the state for now but will be fully briefed upon return.”

The latest attack adds to growing concerns over school kidnappings, banditry, and insecurity affecting northern Nigeria.
