Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri Dumps PDP, Keeps Next Move Secret
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking another major defection within the opposition fold.
Diri made the announcement on Wednesday during a brief session with top government officials at the Executive Council Chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House in Yenagoa.
Although the governor did not disclose his next political destination, his resignation was immediately endorsed by 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker.
The move comes barely 24 hours after Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, also abandoned the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), fueling fresh speculation about a growing wave of defections from the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political observers say Diri’s exit could further weaken the PDP’s presence in the South-South, a region once regarded as the party’s stronghold.
