BBL Death: Joe Akatugba Warns Actresses Against Cosmetic Surgery for Fame

Notable filmmaker and ANCOP president Joe Akatugba has cautioned aspiring actors and actresses against pursuing fame through cosmetic surgery, following the reported death of Elena Jessica linked to complications from a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure.

In a statement shared on a filmmakers’ WhatsApp platform, Akatugba expressed concern over the growing trend of young women resorting to body enhancement procedures in an attempt to gain attention or fast-track their careers in the entertainment industry.

He stressed that Nollywood’s success is built on talent, discipline, creativity, and professionalism, not physical appearance or surgical alterations.

“Lasting success has never come from appearance alone,” he said, urging aspiring actresses to focus on developing their craft rather than prioritising cosmetic changes.

Akatugba noted that while beauty and glamour are often associated with the film industry, they do not guarantee long-term success. He added that many enduring careers in Nollywood have been achieved through consistent performance, skill development, and dedication.

The filmmaker further described the reported death as a warning sign, highlighting increasing concerns around the popularity of BBL surgery and other cosmetic procedures, especially among young people influenced by social media trends and perceived industry expectations.

He advised aspiring actresses to avoid pressure to conform to unrealistic body standards and instead invest in professional growth, including training, auditions, and improving acting skills as the foundation for sustainable success in Nollywood.

The warning also reflects broader concerns about the health risks of cosmetic surgery, particularly when procedures are carried out in unregulated environments or without proper medical oversight. Experts have consistently cautioned that surgeries such as BBL can carry serious complications, reinforcing the need for individuals to seek qualified professionals and accredited medical facilities.

Akatugba’s remarks add to ongoing discussions within the entertainment industry about shifting the focus from appearance-driven recognition to merit-based success, while encouraging young aspirants to make informed and health-conscious decisions.
